Cleaning - The Manduka Pro is a closed cell mat meaning it doesn't absorb any water when washing and thus dries a lot faster.

Comfort - What the Manduka PRO lacks in traction right out of the gate, it makes up for it in high-density, comfortable support.

Cushioning - The Manduka PRO ensures high-density cushioning; it provides comfort for the spine, hips, knees, and elbows without allowing for much compression or sinkage. Solid, firm, yet kind of cushioned at the same time. It’s six millimeters thick and cushions the spine enough to allow rocking on one’s back.

Design - When it comes to style, Manduka focuses on performance rather than fashion; it is a minimalist yoga mat that will not stand out or distract from a routine. Furthermore, there is a dot pattern along the bottom which provides an anti-slip floor grip.

Durability - The Manduka PRO will require ten yoga sessions or more in order to be broken in. Designed and guaranteed to last a lifetime, it gets highest marks for durability. It’s guaranteed not to flake, fade, or peel with time, normal abuse, and regular salt rubs. It is also worth noting that some of Manduka’s company staff still use initial PROs made more than 12 years ago.

Material - The Manduka Pro is a high-quality mat composed of polyester and PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and chosen for its comfort and support. Due to the materials and construction of mat, it must be broken-in over time. While there are more "eco" materials used to make biodegradable mats, like natural rubber, PER (polymer environmental resin) or TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer), Manduka considers this line of mats to be an "environmentally conscious choice," as the PVC is eco-certified as zero-waste, and they design their mats for durability. Though PVC isn’t an ideal earth-friendly material, by building a mat to last a lifetime, Manduka aims to reduce overall consumption and waste long-term. It’s also worth noting that this mat is latex-free, which is great for those with latex allergy, and OEKO-TEX-certified, meaning it contains no harmful chemicals.

Breaking In - The Manduka Pro takes a while to break in, but since it’s so durable, it provides years of use in return. When cleaning, it is suggested to scrub down with dawn dish soap and a bristle brush upon purchase to get an immediate difference. The salt thing won’t do much, but is still suggested every now and again for a deep clean.

Breaking In - Issue - Breaking in the Manduka Pro mat has been a point of frustration for more than a few, to the point that workarounds were done in the meantime, such as getting a yoga towel to use the mat with, or using sandpaper after the salt and dish soap solutions. Even after breaking in, there have been reports of the mat still being slippery and thus getting replaced by a Jade mat instead, which doesn’t need breaking in, though it sacrifices durability: Jade mats tend to break down in a matter of a couple of years compared to the Manduka Pro.

Comfort & Stability - The Manduka Pro scored at the top of the pack for comfort and stability. The 6mm thickness provides ample cushion, but the overall effect is still stable and not squishy.

Durability - The Manduka Pro shines when it comes to durability: there have been cases where the mat is still as good as new after 10 years of use.

Grip - When buying the Manduka Pro one doesn’t immediately start with all its strengths on open display: the mat requires a “breaking-in” period of usually a few sessions before it starts to show said strengths. There are cases after breaking in where the mat didn’t feel too sticky like others but also didn’t slide away, and that it has an impressive grip. There are also cases where the mat still feels somewhat slippery after 10 years, but a yoga towel alleviates the issue and is worth it since the mat can last that long with no wear or tear. It’s also advised to learn how to appropriately position hands in poses in order to take advantage of the mat properly.

Grip - Drawbacks - Most are disappointed in the Manduka Pro’s starting grip and the length of time it takes to break the mat in. One such case had proceeded to a power yoga class after only one salt rub and regretted it as the mat was very slippery and unusable without a towel. There are also cases where after using the mat a few times or for a few months the mat was still slippery. Yet more cases exist where the mat was used for 9 years and it was still slippery, thus making some switch to the Lululemon reversible, the Gaiam, or the Jade instead.

Performance - When the Manduka Pro has been fully salted and broken in, the mat allows one to flow freely and easily between poses, performing wonderfully in assisting with said poses with its amazing grip.

Salting - The Manduka PRO requires good salting prior to use: one must sprinkle sea salt over the mat and leave it for a full day, then scrub the salt off with a bit of water, wipe it down, and leave it to dry. This process may need to be repeated a few times to properly season the mat prior to use, as this will enhance its grip and traction.

Traction - Wet - The wet traction on the Manduka Pro was downright slippery, and necessitated the regular drying of hands and feet in order to prevent slipping. The mat is only recommended for Hot Yoga classes, as its closed-cell design keeps the sweat and bacteria out, and one will want to use a towel with good traction on top of the mat to minimize aforementioned slipping.

Comparison vs. Manduka GRP - The GRP mat from Manduka is designed with good, immediate grip in mind: it has an upper layer that provides anti-slip control, particularly in sweaty conditions, and a lower charcoal-infused rubber layer that breathes, absorbs, and eliminates odors. The tradeoff for grip is durability however as the GRP isn’t included in Manduka’s lifetime warranty.

Comparison vs. Lulu Mat - There have been cases where even after treating the Manduka with salt, sun, etc multiple times that it was still too slippery to be used without a towel, souring the experience. The Lulu is slightly less thick/luxurious, but can be used without a towel, and is thus found to be better overall.

Comparison vs. eKo - The Manduka Pro is very dense and hard, but is slippery until broken in. The eKo meanwhile is softer and has more grip from the beginning.

Price - The Manduka Pro’s MSRP is quite pricey at $110, and might not be viable for beginners.

Value - The Manduka Pro is likely to be the better choice of mat as opposed to cheaper alternatives that need to be replaced yearly, though it can feel unappealing to spend on a mat that doesn't have the best traction.

Worth - The Manduka PRO Yoga Mat is worth the investment for the patient individual. The mat takes a while to break in properly and requires practicing yoga carefully until it is sufficiently broken in, but fortunately, it is built to last a lifetime.
