A thicker mat is suggested for practicing on hard ground and won't travel with it, while the 3mm is better if you plan to bring your yoga mat anywhere and if you'll practice on a soft surface like a carpet. Gaiam and Lululemon are recommended for their stickiness, though Lululemon is stickier. Jade is a brand where reviews are 50 bad and 50 good.

Comparison vs Manduka - The Maduka EKO 5mm Mat smells so strong even after being aired for 2 weeks and lacks grip, but it has a great feel and a lifetime warranty that's unnecessary because it doesn't wear. On the other hand, Lululemon is convenient and stickier than Manduka because of the open cells. However, with Lululemon, you'll have to replace the mat after a couple of years as it wears down.
