The Finalmouse Starlight-12 Phantom Small, a continuation of the Starlight-12 lineup, is a wireless gaming mouse made with a signature magnesium alloy shell that features a honeycomb design, making it ultra-lightweight at approximately 44 grams. It has Kailh 8.0 switches and a few slight adjustments to its manufacturing process as an effort by Finalmouse to address quality control concerns in previous models in the lineup. As a result, the mouse’s shape is well-suited for small and medium hands and any grip type, and it also impresses performance-wise, thanks to its proprietary Finalsensor, offering good click latency, low lift-off distance and four CPI presets. Its only drawback is a lack of dedicated software, which prevents adjustment of the sensor settings or reprogramming of buttons.

Overview - Build Quality - The Finalmouse Starlight-12 Phantom isn’t generally impressive outside of its weight. The build quality is downright bad, with the wheel being off center and the shell for Mouse1 and Mouse2 clicks seeming warped. The sides don’t creak and flex much, but considering the $189 price tag this is nothing to write home about. Clicks feel softer, lighter, and generate less noise. The scroll wheel tends to scroll in the opposite direction when browsing web pages.

Overview - Design - The Starlight-12 Phantom Medium is very similar in shape and feel to the M800DB. Of particular note in the build are the side holes as they offer more grip than just a regular flat surface, and the engraving is barely noticeable; due to its shallow depth, it tends to not affect usage. In terms of material, the magnesium chassis of the Starlight-12 feels sturdy and premium, and tends to feel colder than regular plastic mice. The mouse also feels light, even though it’s supposedly 70-grams in weight. Performance-wise, clicks feel amazing, are very tactile and don't feel as heavy as described. The scroll wheel feels good, though lacking compared to the M800DB. There have been no spinouts, LOD issues, double clicking, weird scrolling, or any other hardware-software related issues. Battery seems fine and has reportedly lasted over half a month with no recharge needed, and mouse feet/skates are fast and smooth.

Overview - Performance - The Phantom overall is good in terms of performance, owing to great liftoff distance, good latency, and lack of motion delay. It being wireless and being run via battery does not affect its performance compared to wired mice thanks to its Finalmouse sensor.

Overview - Usage - The Finalmouse Starlight-12 Phantom is decent for office use, great for FPS gaming, mediocre for MMO gaming, exceptional for ultralight gaming, and okay for travel. It’s scroll wheel is lacking in features, but it is well-built, comfortable and very lightweight. It is compatible with both Windows and macOS. It has good click latency, low lift-off distance and four CPI presets. It lacks a dedicated software for sensor settings and button reprogramming, and doesn’t come with a storage compartment for the USB receiver, making it slightly troublesome to carry around. It is also not Bluetooth compatible.

Build Quality - The Finalmouse Starlight-12 Phantom has superb build quality, owing to its sturdy magnesium alloy in the top shell, and strong Ultem plastic in its bottom shell. It does not flex from the sides or from the top down, and does not exhibit creaking. The design of the mouse itself is also satisfactory.

Build - Buttons - The Phantom features a CPI button behind the scroll wheel, that lets one cycle through four preset CPI settings with a slight difficulty, as the button is rather stiff. It also has two side buttons for forward and backward and a bottom switch for toggling wireless mode. The buttons feel good but not at a premium level, though they have a lot of room underneath.

Input Lag - The Phantom needs improvement in terms of input lag for its main clicks as they are reportedly around six milliseconds slower than Logitech’s fastest gaming mice or the G Pro Superlight. An optional firmware update that reduces main click debounce, or allows manual adjustment of it are the anticipated solutions for this.

Issue - Packaging - The Finalmouse Starlight-12 Phantom had poor quality/barebones packaging, especially considering that its retail price was close to $200. The mouse was however light and did not creak when squeezed, likely due to the build material. Movement and glide across a mousepad was satisfactory, clicks and side buttons felt great, and the mouse was also light and wireless. The mouse’s DPI button though was hard to press/click, and the scroll wheel was misaligned and tended to scroll to the wrong direction at times. The firmware update to supposedly fix the scroll wheel issue is not found at the mouse’s official website and instead is in a discord server, where it is named inappropriately, is extremely complicated to install, and doesn’t properly fix the issue. Other mice from the brand also have the exact same shape, have no dedicated software, have quality control issues, are overly expensive, and have high demand and no supply.

Issue - Wheel, Software & Firmware - The mouse’s scroll wheel is not completely centered, causing a lot of problems in operation, such as double-scrolling, random scroll-downs, and scrolling to the opposite direction. The lack of software for DPI adjustment is concerning and the update for the firmware doesn’t fix the mouse’s issues.
