Overview - Build - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a futuristic folding smartphone that is thinner, lighter, and more powerful than ever before. Its high-quality engineering and build quality make it a popular choice for those who prefer a smaller, bulkier device. The tall slim design resembles old Nokia phones, and the stylus is designed for both inner and outer display, being 40% smaller and flatter. The crease on the fold is minimal.
Overview - Features - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts a glorious open screen, solid hinge, and powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, making it ideal for watching videos, reading books, and playing games. It features 12GB RAM and internal storage options, and maintains its predecessor's excellent triple camera system.
Overview - Performance - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers a stunning main screen for watching videos, reading books, and gaming, making it the best media foldable available.
Overview - Popularity - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 popularizes foldables with improvements in design, hinge, and display, while avoiding price hikes. The foldables are already well-received, but price hikes are a concern.
Overview - Upgrade - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers subtle upgrades, including Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass and higher brightness levels. These improvements improve white balance and text clarity in direct sunlight, and the screen automatically adapts to difficult lighting. The Fold 5 is an iterative device, making it the baseline for other foldables in the market. Camera specs and battery remain unchanged.
Overview - Usage - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers an underappreciated feature: reading books on a 7.6-inch screen on a phone. It is perfect for commutes and syncs across devices.
Pros - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 benefits from being thinner and lighter, having a silent, high quality hinge, strong multitasking, impressive camera, great main display performance, good IP rating, durable chassis, light weight at 253g, and a significant upgrade from the older Fold 2 and 3 phones.
Cons - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 suffers from a lack of improvement in battery life, slow charging speeds, poor battery capacity, lack of camera upgrade compared to the Fold 4, dated design, thinner cover screen, and strong competition outside of the US.
Build - Hinge - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a new Flex Hinge mechanism that allows the phone to close without a gap, making it more ergonomic, easier, and comfortable to hold. This innovative mechanism is silent and perfectly dampened, providing a high-quality, luxurious feel. The hinge holds the screen at different viewing angles, making it perfect for casual viewing. The foldable hinge weighs the phone down to 253g and has the same IPX8 water resistance as before. This water drop hinge also makes the crease flatter and reducing cracking issues.
Build - Material - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and back of the phone, with an Armor Aluminum chassis, all contributing to an IPX8 rating.
Build - Screen - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 7.6-inch main screen with 2176 x 1812 resolution, and a cover screen with 2316 x 906 resolution. Both have 120Hz refresh rate and the Gorrila Glass Victus 2.
Build - Weight - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 weighs 8.92 ounces thanks to its thinner design, making it lighter than the Pixel Fold despite the same main display size.
Design - Color Options - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has Cream, Phantom Black, and Icy Blue main color options, with Blue and Gray as additional choices when one purchases from the Samsung online store.
Design - Hinge - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a thinner design thanks to its Flex Hinge, with a thickness of 13.4mm when folded and 6.1mm when unfolded; a noticeable decrease from its predecessor. This also allows the phone to fold flat in a departure from previous generations, while still having a visible screen crease.
Camera - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers various selfie options, including a 10MP cover screen, 4MP Under Display Camera (UDC), and main cameras with the cover screen acting as a viewfinder. The inclusion of a telephoto lens reduces noise and image degradation. The 50MP main camera uses the same hardware as the standard Galaxy S23, with a 1/1.56-inch image sensor. The 3X telephoto zoom lens is the same as the Galaxy S21/22/23 Ultras, providing a strong zoom in the foldable space. The "main" selfie camera is better, and the triple camera system on the back appears to be identical hardware.
Compatibility - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is compatible with Samsung’s S Pen, though it lacks a built-in docking slot, supplemented by the purchase of a case. The Pen works on the main display and is 40% thinner than previous iterations.
Display - The Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 7.6-inch main display has a 23.1:9 aspect ratio, and can reach brightness levels of up to 1,750 nits. It keeps the same in-display camera as its predecessors.
Drag-and-Drop Photos - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a new drag-and-drop feature for photos, enabling one to take a photo from the Gallery and drag it to a Samsung Notes file, attaching it to the note.
Flex Mode - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a flex mode which provides media controls on the lower half of the screen when the phone is placed partially folded on a flat surface. One UI supports this mode more thoroughly than other foldable phones.
Flex Mode Panel - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has the Flex Mode Panel, which is a control panel for features like camera, video/music playback and teleconferencing.
Multiwindow - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has great Multiwindow functionality with split screen: one can have up to three apps open at once, though over two can feel like overkill. The multitasking system also allows up to five apps in floating windows.
Operating System, One UI, & Security Updates - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 runs on Android 13 with Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 installed and its July 1 security update.
Software - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a Samsung device that features a desktop-style taskbar with up to four recent apps, enabling multitasking. The One UI, which requires some patience to set up, is fluid and logical. The device also offers DeX, a sandbox UI that projects a Windows-like interface to another display. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 also includes software improvements, optimized apps like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
Specifications - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has impressive specifications, such as its chipset, display, RAM, storage options, decent battery, connectivity options, operating system, camera setup, carrier support, overall dimensions and weight, decent color options, decent charging speed, IPX8 rating, Stylus compatibility, and security platform.
Battery Life - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 4,400mAh battery, similar to the Z Fold 4, but with a slightly longer battery life. With three to four hours of screen time, it ends the day with 35% to 50% remaining. The phone can last up to two full days, but with gaming and 5G connectivity, it should still last a single day. The battery life is decent, but it requires a battery pack for extended periods.
Camera - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a 10MP camera with realistic skin tones and accurate portrait effect, producing good quality for video calls. Despite a newer Qualcomm chip and Samsung's software processing, there are no significant differences in camera performance between the Fold 5 and Fold 4. The 12MP ultrawide camera captures landscapes without distortion and properly exposes skies, but may suffer from soft images in low light.
Charging - Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 lacks a charging block, requiring a compatible charger for 45-watt Super Fast Charging speeds. Anker's 313 GaN charger and USB Type-C to Type-C cable recharge the device in 80 minutes, while lower-power chargers may take up to two hours. Wireless and reverse charging are also available.
Chipset - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 chipset enhances battery and camera performance, retaining functionality and hardware from Fold 4. While not superior to other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones, it's a great chip paired with 12GB RAM.
Gaming - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a sleek, portable flagship phone that handles the latest games smoothly and efficiently. Its new vapor chamber cooling ensures a smooth, fast experience, even during long gaming sessions.
Image Quality - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 features new lenses, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, and improved software to enhance quality. The photos are lively, bright, and realistic, with excellent white balance and controlled exposure. Samsung's image processing is mature and confident, producing aesthetically pleasing main camera photos with proper exposure and software-assisted bokeh.

Operating System - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 supports multi-app running, floating window functionality, and fluid pinch-to-zoom gestures with smooth animations.
Accessories - Samsung has released the S Pen Fold Edition for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which offers a thinner tip, 4,096 pressure levels, and IP68 water and dust resistance. The optional extra costs $55, but there is no slot in the Z Fold 5's body. A thinner case, available in various colors, costs $100 and comes with the S Pen. While not the most attractive case, it provides a better solution for those who want the stylus available.

Alternatives - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has compelling alternatives with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy S23 Ultra. The latter offers a smaller, more practical device with a larger screen, camera, and chip. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is still expensive, but at $1,199, it's significantly cheaper than the Z Fold 5. If already owning the Z Fold 4, it's worth keeping it and waiting for 2024's updates.
Competition - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 faces competition from the Google Pixel Fold, Motorola's Razr Plus, Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra, all of which are cheaper and more appealing. While some argue that Samsung is perfecting its design, others believe it's playing it safe by making iterative updates instead of pushing for more innovation. Honor's Magic V2 and OnePlus' foldable are also gaining popularity, while Google Pixel Fold manages to outshine Samsung in some areas, such as battery capacity. While the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is still the most polished foldable phone, it may be dated compared to Honor Magic V2 or Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. The U.S. and European launches of Honor Magic V2 and Mix Fold 3 could give Samsung enough pressure to push harder next year.
Comparison vs. Galaxy Z Fold 4 - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is significantly thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4, with a 2.4mm thinner cover screen and 7.6-inch inner screen. The phone has the same size and resolution as the Galaxy Z Fold 4, with variable refresh rate. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a better hinge and Snapdragon chip. However, they still want better cameras and improvements to the inner display's longevity.

Comparison vs. Galaxy S23 Ultra - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers a superior camera experience compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, boasting a 50-megapixel main camera, 12MP wide-angle, and 10MP telephoto for 3x optical zoom. The S23 Ultra offers better display, battery life, and performance, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is more expensive and lacks these features.

Comparison vs. Galaxy S23 Ultra, Comparison vs. Galaxy S23, & Comparison vs. Galaxy Z Fold 4 - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers an inferior camera experience compared to Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra, which boasts a 50-megapixel main camera, 12MP wide-angle, and 10MP telephoto. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 competes in power and software, making it a more suitable option for multitasking users. The Galaxy S23 Ultra offers significant improvements in display, battery, cameras, and performance, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is more expensive and has worse battery life and cameras.

Comparison vs. Galaxy S23 Ultra, Comparison vs. OnePlus 11, & Comparison vs. Google Pixel Fold - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is outperformed by the Galaxy S23 Ultra and its larger 5,000mAh capacity battery. The OnePlus 11 also charges far faster, and provides a little more use time. The Google Pixel Fold's battery however only lasted for around a day in tests and recharged to full in 90 minutes, which makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 outperform it.

Comparison vs. Google Fold - The Galaxy Z Fold 5’s screen is unappealing; shorter and wider screens are more desired by some, and opening the phone for every little thing is taxing. It is hoped that the Google Fold has its new screen tech which will make it last longer.
Comparison vs. Xiaomi, & Comparison vs. Huawei Mate X3 - The Galaxy Z Fold 5’s minor updates and changes are disappointing when compared to the significant upgrades made by Xiaomi and Huawei every year, surpassing Samsung in hardware and features. Availability - Bundles - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a preorder bundle option with the Buds 2, 25W charger, and Samsung Care+ plan, which gives the S Pen for free and an increased storage capacity.
Price - Availability - The Galaxy Z Fold 5’s starting price is $1,799, and it has Icy Blue, Cream, or Phantom Black color options in Amazon and BestBuy, along with other retail stores and major carriers, with Blue and Gray added if one purchases directly from Samsung. The phone is set to be sold for 1,749 British Pounds on release in the U.K.
Price - Competition - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has direct competition in the U.S. in the form of the Google Pixel Fold at the same price range. In the U.K. there is also the Honor Magic Vs at $1,760, though it isn’t a match for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and likely won’t be for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 as well.
Price - Release & Variants - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is set to release on August 11, though preorders are already open at the starting price of approximately $1,800. Upon purchase of the phone directly from Samsung, one can get a 512GB model instead of the base 256GB model, while there is also a 1TB model that retails for $2,009.
Price - Value - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is considered to be still prohibitively expensive for a vast majority — particularly in an era of economic downturns, in which pricing is a major contributor to declining smartphone sales.
Issue - Case - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is unable to remain flat on a table when placed in its S Pen case, due to the case’s right half being thicker as the S Pen hole juts out, and its case will not clip onto the Galaxy Z Fold 4 because the camera lens punchouts don’t line up. One can also use the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s case for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but at the expense of covering the flashlight.
Issue - Charging - The Galaxy Z Fold 5 requires a good mount to hold it in place if one decides to charge it unfolded, else there is a risk of the charging coils not aligning with the phone, preventing charging altogether.
Issue - Crease - It is unlikely to achieve a 100% crease-less screen for the current Galaxy Z Fold 5, though future displays can eventually appear crease-less as materials continue to improve. Other phone brands have successfully made foldables with less noticeable creases, such as Oppo Find N2, Huawei X3, and Honor Magic V2. However, the most accessible and refined option in the west may not be as advanced as the Chinese foldables.
Issue - Under-Display Camera - The Galaxy Z Fold 5's under-display camera is ideal for teleconferencing and video calls, though it has room for improvement. Its display interference causes dim and smudged shots, which is not ideal for a business machine, though it is serviceable for Teams/Zoom meetings.
Issue - Value for Money - Some consider Samsung's foldables to not get enough criticism as a phone and flagship, and that they do not offer enough for their price which is comparable to the Galaxy Series, which are considered more competent and versatile. Their only appeal is their folding feature, and they fall behind with regard to specifications, considered as an expensive gimmick with features barely justifying their cost.

Issue - Zoom - The Galaxy Z Fold 5’s camera focusing potentially can cause issues when shooting in low light, as it tends to get confused with where it is meant to focus.
Manufacturer - Samsung’s target market for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are people who own the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and below, as the phone is a significant upgrade for these specific users.
