The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a popular and affordable flip phone option, offering a consistent camera, water resistance, extra software updates, and better cover screen widgets. It competes with the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Oppo Find N2 Flip, boasting a large external display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and a gapless fold mechanism. However, the phone has several compromises, including outer screen size, battery life, and camera quality. While the outer screen is useful for checking time, notifications, and key information, it may be redundant to run full apps on the small display.
Summary - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a popular and affordable flip phone option, offering a consistent camera, water resistance, extra software updates, and better cover screen widgets. It competes with the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Oppo Find N2 Flip, boasting a large external display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and a gapless fold mechanism. However, the phone has several compromises, including outer screen size, battery life, and camera quality. While the outer screen is useful for checking time, notifications, and key information, it may be redundant to run full apps on the small display.
Overview - Build - Samsung offers two foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5, with similar dimensions, aspect ratios, cameras, and batteries. Screenshots reveal the large cover screen, gapless hinge, and widgets for the cover screen.
Overview - Camera - The Galaxy Z Flip 5's camera system is mediocre for a $1,000 phone, lacking telephoto lens and digital zoom. Ultrawide photos are flat in good lighting, and low-light selfies with the main camera are hit-and-miss.
Overview - Display - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 display offers messaging, WhatsApp, calendar, clock widgets, and rear camera selfies with large previews for precise poses.
Overview - Features - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a 3.4" flex window cover screen, dual main cameras, USB-C port, volume rocker, and a fingerprint sensor for app authentication and unlocking.
Overview - Popularity - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 popularizes foldables with improvements in design, hinge, and display, while avoiding price hikes. The foldables are already well-received, but price hikes are a concern.
Recommendation - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is an excellent entry point for those transitioning from slab-style phones to flip phones. Its cover screen is a useful tool, making it suitable for adventurous individuals who are willing to try new ways of doing things.
Pros - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 benefits from useful cover screen and widgets, IPX8 water resistance, years of software and security support, compact and premium build, and clever features.
Cons - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 suffers from average battery life, complicated app functionality in the cover screen, uncertain long-term durability, recycled cameras from the Z Flip 4, and slow charging.
Build - Battery - The Galaxy Z Flip 5's small 3,700mAh battery struggles with AOD enabled, limiting screen-on time to 4.5 hours, with only 5% remaining afterwards.
Build - Charging - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers 25W wired and 15W wireless charging, with 4.5W reverse wireless for earbuds. The 25W is rather low compared to the OnePlus 11 and Samsung's S23 Ultra.
Build - Cover Screen - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a 3.4-inch cover screen, allowing quick text responses with a QWERTY keyboard, monthly calendar, walking directions, and weather checking without face-to-face interaction.
Build - Hinge - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the first Samsung foldable to close flat, featuring a new droplet-style hinge design. This makes the phone sleeker and more durable, similar to other clamshell foldables.
Build - Portability - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 folds down into a pocketable square shape, resembling classic flip phones from the early 2000s, making it easy to hold or store.
Build - Water Resistance & Dust Resistance - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers IPX8 water resistance, similar to its predecessor, but lacks dustproof rating. While impressively IPX8 water-resistant, dust could cause issues.
Design - Crease - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 crease on the other side of the screen remains unchanged, with Samsung removing gaps for a smaller, thinner device. This reduces dust and debris accumulation. The crease may be more noticeable after prolonged use.
Design - Hinge - The Galaxy Z Flip 5's hinge redesign allows the screen to billow more at the crease, reducing stress on the folding display. Samsung claims the hinge and screen can play together for 200,000 movements without breaking, ensuring over five years of use.
Design - Material - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers a soft, powdery feel without sticky silicone, but the strappy back adds bulk, but those with previous strappy cases may be used to it.
Apps - Samsung's Good Lock app allows users to run full apps on the outside screen. To enable it, download the app, MultiStar, and enable the Launcher Widget. From there, select the desired apps and add the Good Lock widget to the outer display.
Battery - The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s battery life remains consistent with a 3,700mAh cell, ensuring a screen time of 4 hours. Setting the battery saver in Bixby routines doesn't affect performance or increase battery life when in the pocket. The device's performance profile can be changed to light in battery settings, which may improve performance without affecting the front screen.
Camera - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a 12-megapixel f/1.8 stabilized main camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera. The inside screen features a 10-megapixel selfie camera, but the flip form makes it easy to use the rear-facing cameras for selfies and video calls. The main lens has great dynamic range and is a good camera to carry around for years. The ultra-wide camera is 12MP but has a different sensor with f/2.2 but no OIS, and is not as good in quality. The 10MP front-facing camera cut-out on the main screen is solid and works well with selfies as long as beautifying modes are turned off. Video clips are generally good, with Samsung using AI to improve low-light video quality. The phone is fun to shoot photos and video with, as it can be folded into an L shape for hands-free video or held up camcorder-style. Stabilized footage can process at up to Ultra HD (4K) at 60fps.
Chipset - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy chipset, providing snappy performance similar to the S23 series. The overclocked version, ensures a comfortable and efficient experience.
Cover Screen - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a 720 x 748 60Hz cover screen with a bright, always-on display for time, date, battery percentage, and app notification icons. It also offers a larger canvas for lock screen customization, with personalization options. This 3.4in 60Hz display also allows for full apps like Google Maps, YouTube, and WhatsApp, making it more functional and visually appealing. New wallpapers and improved camera previews are also available. However, it lacks the ability to run dedicated apps on the cover screen, which may have been a missed feature.
Display - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz display with 22:9 aspect ratio which looks near-identical to its predecessor, but is thinner at 6.9mm unfolded and 15.1mm folded and has a large horizontal crease across its middle.
Flex Mode - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a ‘flex mode’ that allows the phone to act like a tripod for hands-free use when the phone is folded halfway, which is great for video calls and works with a few apps.
Flex Mode Panel - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an updated flex mode panel – adding thumbnails and customizable controls on top of its ability to keep any app open on the top half of the screen and turn the bottom half into a touchpad, making the phone akin to a tiny laptop.
Form Factor - The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s flip form factor is appealing for those who wish to get more basic chores done via phone while avoiding getting distracted into checking other notifications or scrolling through feeds.
Haptics - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 have great haptics with tight and clipped buzzes for the keyboard and great use of different vibration patters around its UI.
Software - One UI - The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s One UI 5.1 has an appealing design and behavior; it is very customizable and allows for impressive level of personalization by users.
Speakers - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has dual stereo speakers that can reach good volume levels without distortion, though the sound can become piercing. They are great for YouTube and podcasts, but a Bluetooth speaker is recommended for music.
Specifications - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has impressive specifications, such as its decent price, large screen size, storage options, camera setup, video capabilities, IP rating, decent battery, charging capabilities, overall dimensions and weight, operating system, display capabilities, connectivity options, chipset, RAM, color options, fingerprint scanner and face recognition features, and build quality.
Storage - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an increased base level for internal storage at 256GB compared to its predecessors, to account for the increased starting price.
Widgets - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is given a good number of customizable widgets which take great advantage of the available screen space to provide fairly important information at a glance.
Zoom - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 utilizes digitally cropped zoom for its cameras, managing 2x, 4x and 10x with the UI, though 10x can look shoddy while 4x is impressive. For the display, there is a pinch gesture added for zooming out to show one all currently-enabled widget screens.
Battery - The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s battery performance is decent, able to last around 11 hours and 5 minutes with PC Mark’s battery test, thanks in part to its upgraded chipset.
Chipset - The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s chipset boast a slightly higher CPU clock speed and an additional GPU core, resulting in better performance and improved camera processing, though the phone can struggle when used for high-end games and multitasking, owing to its lower 8GB RAM capacity compared to 12GB in other phones.

Comparison vs. Motorola Razr Plus - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola's Razr Plus share a $999 price tag, offering a larger, more useful cover screen. Samsung's flip phone is more durable, has better cover screen widgets, and has a better camera system. However, some apps may not work as well on the Flip 5's display due to the lack of a persistent text input box.

Comparison vs. Motorola Razr 40 UltraDisplaySizeFunctionality
Comparison vs. Galaxy Z Flip 4 - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a decent phone; battery life and cameras are OK. The narrower and longer design is preferred, which is easier to hold and doesn't give notice to the crease at the bottom of the screen. The hinge is impressive, and the screen on the outside is bigger, which is preferred over Motorola. The crease is visible but not noticeable. The phone takes a couple of weeks to understand usage patterns, but results in significant battery improvement after two weeks. The matte feel of the Flip 4 without a case is appealing, while the new 5 feels more fingerprinty and fragile due to the glossy finish and larger screen.
Comparison vs. Google Pixel 7 - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 loses in value, camera, display, and battery life compared to the Google Pixel 7, which costs just $599.

Comparison vs. Apple iPhones - Apple has released very similarly designed phones since 2017 with the same candy bar and just slightly different notches, which nevertheless sell well. Samsung is doing the same with its Foldables.

Comparison vs. Galaxy Z Flip 3 - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has around 4,000 mAh battery capacity and a cover display upgrade from the 3. It may allow for more usage without the Open Phone to Continue feature. However, some argue that it should have a smaller cover display, only allowing notification LEDs and a clock/alarm display.

Availability - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 costs $999 and is available at Samsung, Amazon, Best Buy and other retail stores with a release date of August 11th. Samsung has also opened pre-orders that come with a deal to upgrade to the 512GB model for the same price as the base 256GB model. There is also a bundle that includes a free S-Pen upon pre-ordering the phone with the Buds 2, 25W charger, and Samsung Care+ plan.
Price - Alternatives - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a costly flip phone, with Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Oppo Find N2 Flip being the only alternative options in the US and UK.
Drawback - Camera - Some wish Samsung would switch the phone's telephoto and ultrawide sensors for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 as it is considered their most premium device, and as such should have better features.
Drawback - Cover Screen - The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover screen, while larger than its predecessors, is considered by some to be an admission of compromise with a flip phone in terms of features.
Issue - Battery Life - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 lost over 10% battery overnight, possibly due to the always-on function on the cover screen. Samsung's foldable phones' batteries will not change much as long as the phone size doesn't change, and they rely on software and processor to improve battery life. Flip phones in general are not known for their battery life; those with previous S23 Ultra experience will notice a difference.
Issue - Build - Some wish the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and other flip phones used 'glasstic' material as it would make the phones cheaper, lighter, and more durable with easier color options.
Issue - Charging Speed - The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has very slow charging speed, losing to the OnePlus 11 and making it undesirable for those who desire fast charging phones.
Issue - Cover Screen - The Cover Screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is considered unappealing design wise, and worse performance-wise except when using it as a viewfinder to snap a selfie or group photo with its main camera. Opening the phone and operating with its main display is considered better overall. The smaller screens on the Z Flip 4 and the Motorola Razr 40 which don't distract while still displaying key information are much better.
Issue - Value for Money - Some consider Samsung's foldables to not get enough criticism as a phone and flagship, and that they do not offer enough for their price which is comparable to the Galaxy Series, which are considered more competent and versatile. Their only appeal is their folding feature, and they fall behind with regard to specifications, considered as an expensive gimmick with features barely justifying their cost.
