Texture & Consistency - It has a versatile texture depending on your need. It can be creamy with little to no lather if you apply the cleanser on dry skin and add a bit of water to your fingertips. But it can be foamy if you wet your hands and apply the cleanser to dry or wet your skin. The creamy form creates a softening effect on the skin. It works great as a double cleanser. However, a patch test before use is recommended to ensure safe use. It's also very affordable and has a fungal acne-safe ingredients list.
Purpose - The small bottle can run for 4 months and works well morning and night. It also doesn't claim to do anything special, and it's just a face wash, nice and simple.
Recommendation - Keratosis Pilaris - A user suffering from a life-long ordeal with keratosis pilaris, also known as 'chicken skin,' has their mother recommend the Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser.
Recommendation - Rosacea - Vanicream's gentle face cleanser and the softness of Fairface Washcloths are the best skin care duo for rosacea and sensitive skin.
Recommendation - Eczema - The brand product line is highly recommended for anyone suffering from borderline eczema as it works well and is one of the best neutral lines of products you could buy at an affordable price, depending on your budget.
Formulation - Vanicream's formulation, without any fragrances, dyes, parabens, formaldehyde, lanolin, oils, sulfates, or gluten, is great for someone with sensitive skin.
Ingredients - Generally, it has no fancy smells, masking fragrances, harsh chemicals, soap or oils, botanical extracts, sulfates or gluten, pore-clogging ingredients, and preservatives. Specifically, ingredients include purified water, glycerin, coco-glucoside, sodium cocoyl glycinate, acrylates copolymer, caprylyl glycol, Mica, sodium chloride, 1,2-hexanediol, titanium dioxide, sodium hydroxide, disodium EDTA, and it is pH Balanced, Dermatologist tested and praised by the National Eczema Association. It might seem like a long list of chemically-sounding ingredients. Still, each ingredient has been specifically chosen to create a gentle, non-irritating facial cleanser that those with skin sensitivities can tolerate well.
Mica - It contains Mica, which gives a slight shimmer. It's an ingredient that can be irritating and mislead you into thinking your skin looks glowier than it is. If you don't like that, an alternative is Bioderma's sensibio gel cleanser (pink bottle).
Feel - It gives a clean feeling after washing without any residue on the skin. It also doesn't give a tight, dry, or itchy feeling. It feels like a soft cleanser, which can be surprising as it has Mica.
Scent - It's unscented, but from all the products mixing in formulation, it has an off scent of a chemical, glue, or nail-polish-like odor. Performance-wise, it works well and has helped with fungal acne.
Compatibility With Other Products - It works well with many products; thus, you should not have any breakouts unless there's something wrong with your other products. Specifically, it works with drugstore, high-end, and middle-range products with no problems.
Performance - True to its description, it cleans the face gently and doesn't make the skin tight or too dry. It's a great affordable option for someone with sensitive skin, allergies, eczema, and has gotten rashes from certain lotions and beauty products.
Performance - Acne - It helps in keeping painful maskne in check. It also helps calm inflamed skin and prevents acne from getting worse. It's well-rated by users, and the company has a Climate Pledge Friendly badge on Amazon. It uses sustainability certifications to highlight products that support a commitment to help preserve the natural world. It also uses compact packaging to reduce the carbon footprint of the product.
Performance - Cleansing - It's great for calming irritated skin as it cleanses the face without drying it out and gives a clean feeling but not a hydrated feeling, similar to hydrating cleansers. For cleansing, it works well in removing a water-resistant sunscreen, but if extra dirty, you may use it twice to ensure effective cleansing. In contrast, for makeup, you can use micellar water, Lancôme, or Clinique first.
Performance - Dermatitis - An allergist doctor recommended Vanicream for bad dermatitis of the hands and mouth, and it was the only brand that helped the user from the blistering and itchiness.
Performance - Effectiveness - After 2 weeks of use, it significantly calmed down rosacea, the dry patches had vanished, and the face became the softest it had ever felt.
Performance - Makeup - It has trouble removing certain mascaras and eyeliners, leaving some residue but nothing major. If you spend some time and lightly massage the cleanser around the eye area, it does well and remove 95% of full face makeup.
Skin Compatibility - It's geared for people with sensitive skin, but all skin care types can use it, especially if you want a good clean without over-drying and if you don't like a hydrating cleanser.
Usage - Allergy - It's a great help for allergies, and their moisturizer also works well. Specifically, it's a lotion-like cleanser that's fragrance-free, designed for sensitive skin, and is accepted by the National Eczema Association, which is great for individuals with eczema.
Usage - Makeup - It doesn't make the skin feel tight or irritated, and it doesn't strip oils, yet it removes makeup easily with at least 2 washes, although it doesn't claim to have the ability to completely remove makeup.
Usage - Second Cleanser - It's gentle and works excellent for a second cleanse, and it still works well when combined with Differin. A user also found it great for post-menopause skin and used it after Cetaphil and Cerave started stinging.

Closed Comedones - A user experienced having a lot of closed comedones after using Vanicream, and they felt like it stripped their moisture barrier as well.
Drying - A user said that no matter how gentle cleansers claim to be if they foam, they dry out their skin. Other users have also found the product drying, as it's not a hydrating cleanser but just a gentle cleanser. Still, it's not an irritating cleanser, just drying.
Irritating - It didn't cause a breakout but irritated the skin and made it red; the user resorted to Aveeno calm and restored oat cleanser to calm their skin.
Skin Benefits - Results - Using Vanicream every evening makes the skin balanced, calm, and clear with its simple, scientific formulation and proven results, it's easy to see why it's a dermatologist-recommended and mom-approved product.
Vanicream Gentle vs Cerave Hydrating - A user found the Cerave hydrating cleanser to give a moderate burning sensation, making the skin red and angry, while the Vanicream calmed their skin. However, their friend uses Cerave, which worked for them with no issues. Another user also experienced a burning/stinging sensation when using Cerave and when they switched to Vanicream, there were no issues.
Vanicream Gentle vs Cerave - A user found Cerave to contribute to their breakouts, while the Vanicream was simple and has never caused an issue. Another user noticed that the Cerave doesn't completely clean their skin, while Vanicream was too drying for them. Another user claimed that no Cerave product could compete with Vanicream. Other users also felt Cerave doesn't clean as well as Vanicream, which is gentle on the skin. Also, they claim that Cerave causes stinging at times. The only issue with Vanicream is the Mica, which seems unnecessary and wasteful.
EWG Rating - In the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database, you can gather information for each ingredient in the product. Specifically, it's an organization that aims to help consumers make safer, educated choices regarding what they use in their homes and bodies. EWG's safety rating report on toxicity levels, allergens, etc., rated an average score of 2 on a scale of 1 (Best) - 10 (Worst).
Holy Grail - It's a holy grail that doesn't make the skin feel tight and stripped afterward. Specifically, the cleanser has been as gentle as they claim as good for the skin without irritating. It's even better used with Fairface Washcloths for Rosacea skin care. Plus, their moisturizer is also great.
Purpose - Dermatologists including Dendy Englemen, MD, Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, and Dr. Dray have recommended Vanicream's Gentle Facial Cleanser for many of their patients with sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, perioral dermatitis, acne, rosacea, and allergies as its gentle formula provides thorough cleansing without the worry of irritation or skin reactions that many traditional cleansers can cause. It's also Melissa's go-to recommended facial cleanser for sensitive skin or those prone to eczema and contact dermatitis.
