Overview - It shows a sharp and color-accurate image with a dynamic range, and the lens zooms to 2.1. The low lag is also great for gaming. Additionally, the HDMI ports and video processing features are upgraded, with the fully motorized lens being the most impressive feature for its price. Considering the features and overall image quality at sub-$3,000, it's a worthy projector. Though not as good as NX5, it doesn't need to as it's half the latter's price and gives 90% similar performance.

Pros/Cons - It looks great even though it's not a laser version that preserves black levels. Also, the contrast is not as good as an OLED, but the image is way bigger. Nonetheless, the contrast is enough for s suboptimal room with enough brightness, at least in SDR, accurate color, sharp from 15 feet away, low latency, and a motorized lens that can shift/zoom/focus. But it gets loud in the brightest mode.

Build - It uses an LCD light engine, which isn't a 4K native resolution but a 4K enhancement technology that shifts each pixel diagonally to double Full HD resolution. The 5050UB uses Epson's tried-and-true 3LCD light engine. It has a 250-watt UHE lamp and an internal filter that moves into place to extend the color gamut out to DCI-P3. 3LCDs are brighter and have more accurate colors without a rainbow effect. Exterior-wise, the IR sensor and vents are found in front, while the top has a few LED indicator lights.

Connectivity Options - The unit's connectivity includes 2 HDMI 2.0, an analog RGB, 2 USB ports, LAN, a 12V trigger, an RS-232 remote, a backlit remote, and a Kensington security lock. Specifically, the HDMI ports support 4K HDR at 60 FPS, USB-A is used for firmware and service ports, and the RS-232 and 12V are used to control the unit remotely. Additionally, it has one of the best implementations of HDMI CEC.

Brightness - It's claimed to produce 2,600 lumens, but y, the result is higher. Bright Cinema mode measured roughly 192 nits or about 1,732 lumens. Also, it covers 100% of rec 709 and DCI-P3, and it doesn't have a degraded red or green signal; it's just bright and beautiful. With the lamp mode in High and the iris off, the 5050UB produces 192.3 nits or roughly 1,732 lumens. The lamp mode in a medium setting produced a maximum of 1,758 lumens. For HDR10 content, in Digital Cinema mode, it reached 1,019 calibrated lumens. But, the Eco mode drops the light output by about 30%.

Contrast Ratio - The native contrast ratio has an average of 5,203:1 across various modes. With the dynamic iris turned off and the projector setup to give as much light output as possible, it measured 5,020:1 native on/off contrast. Setting the projector up to give as much contrast as possible, sacrificing light output in the process, it measured 6,771:1 native on/off contrast. Enabling the dynamic iris, set to the High-Speed setting, it measured 58,544:1 and 61,675:1 dynamic on/off contrast, respectively. Enabling the iris, which opens with bright images and closes with dark images, the dynamic contrast ratio reached beyond 100,000:1.

Grayscale - Post-Calibration - Changing the preset to -2, along with minor RGB tweaks, resulted in a raised luminance curve up to 2.19 average and lowered the grayscale error to a reference-level .97dE.

Grayscale Post-Calibration

Grayscale - Pre-Calibration - Grayscale tracking is near-perfect out of the box with minimal green errors visible from 40-50% brightness. However, the gamma is too light, which can reduce its full depth potential and affects color saturation.

HDR - The HDR 4 setting provided the best balance of dynamic range and color saturation. HDR mode, set to Medium brightness with enabled manual iris and disabled auto iris, the peak output was 117.1736 nits white and .0216 nits black with 5429.5:1 contrast. But brightness is reduced due to the filter for DCI-P3. The filter required for the DCI-P3 color gamut affects the brightness reduction. Regarding HDR on this projector, it has a better and more stunning HDR that's not only brighter and color accurate than most options at its price point.

Cinema Mode - Although the Cinema mode offered wider colors for HDR content, it was dimmer, and the ~10% greater color gamut for ~60% less light is not a worthy trade-off. Also, the contrast ratio was about 40% better in this mode.

Digital Cinema Mode - The Digital Cinema picture mode was the ideal mode out of the box for HDR10, allowing the use of included P3 color filter and boosting color saturation beyond REC709. After calibration, it achieved 96% P3 color gamut coverage within the REC2020 triangle. It can benefit from watching Ultra HD Blu-ray, as color saturation goes beyond REC709 and the P3 filter results in a 42% loss in lumen output.

Performance - Creed - The fight scenes in Creed offer a great chance for Ultra HD displays to flex their muscle. Performance - First Man - The First Man had several scenes that tested the speed of a dynamic contrast or auto-iris system. Performance - Mission Impossible Fallout - The Mission Impossible Fallout was loaded with dark and drab scenes, and the 5050UB had no trouble picking out fine detail, and there were no hints of banding, even in wide shots due to its 10-bit HDR processing. Also, highlights and bits of bright color shone through the murk, which made the picture pop even in the darkest sequences. Under HDR 4 setting, drabness overtook the image, and the black levels no longer melted into the letterbox bars.

Comparison vs RS2000 - The Mummy on Ultra HD Blu-ray did show more noticeable differences. For instance, the opening scene has wide shots of the fictitious city of Hamunaptra. The stone facade on some of the ancient structures had many intricate details that the RS2000 rendered exquisitely. At the same time, the 5050UB slightly obscured some of the fine detail. But if the 5050UB wasn't compared to the RS2000, the lack in fine detail won't be noticeable as the 5050UB does a convincing job getting greater-than-1080p resolution on the screen, with only a few instances with the right Ultra HD Blu-ray titles.

Also, it supports HDR, a wider P3 color gamut, and comes with a fully motorized all-glass lens. In terms of contrast, 5050UB is a bit brighter.
