Display - The G9 Gaming Monitor is expensive, but it offers a great and huge picture with its class-leading brightness, contrast, and excellent color performance. It smoothly handles fast motion, although the input lag is slightly higher than expected on a high-end gaming monitor but still quite low to satisfy most gamers. Additionally, it's a great replacement for 3 screens and can wrap you up in its picture. However, there may be some screen defects, so buying from sources with an easy return policy is best.

Summary - The G9 is a super ultrawide gaming monitor with a curved 49" screen and 32:9 aspect ratio, spanning nearly the entire field of view to deliver an immersive gaming experience. It has a fast response time, high refresh rate, and variable refresh rate technology support. It can display a wide color gamut, get extremely bright, produce vibrant colors, and make highlights pop in HDR content. However, its blacks look grayish in the dark, its black uniformity is bad, and it has terrible local dimming. Also, the 240Hz refresh rate is achievable only with graphics cards with a Display Stream Compression (DSC) feature.

Build Quality - The G9's build quality is similar to the G7. The screen is made of decent-quality plastic, while the stand is metal covered with a thin plastic shell that feels fragile but shouldn't be a problem when installed. Also, the headphone hook is flimsy. Overall, there are no issues with overall construction besides its wobbling, which is expected from a center-mounted super ultrawide monitor.

Design - The G9's physical attributes are large and wide, although the front bezel is thin at 10mm while the top, sides, and bottom are at 17mm, surrounded by a black band. A small Samsung logo and G-Sync certification sticker can also be found at the bottom bezel. Plus, a joystick is located below it. Also, there's a microscopic, blue power LED that is not distracting. The rear of the monitor is white, which is common.

Ports - The ports in the G9 include 2 DisplayPort 1.4, 1 HDMI 2.0 input, 1 upstream USB 3.0, 2 downstream USB 3.0, audio, and a power connector. Also, to hit the full 5120x1440 resolution at 240Hz in the DisplayPort, you'll need a GPU capable of display stream compression. On the other hand, the HDMI port is limited to 60Hz. It's got dual DisplayPort inputs, a USB 3.0 hub, audio, and an HDMI port.

Size - The 49" is not too wide, although it seems massive at first, after getting used to it, you'll adapt to the other side of the spectrum. Its size is similar to 2 27" monitors. You'll need almost 4 feet of desk width and around 17 inches depth to accommodate the G9. Also, its height allows you to sit at an ideal distance of 2-3 feet, with the pixel structure invisible and the sides of the screen visible at the edge of peripheral vision.

randomfrankp

07/11/2020
Stand - The monitor connects to a thin, sturdy V-necked stand on a wide, V-shaped base. Plus, the stand's feet are very wide but thin, so there's still usable desk space in front. The stand features height adjustment with no tilt because of the monitor's size. Also, it allows swiveling while remaining sturdy. However, it doesn't support well, causing wobbling due to the super ultrawide format.

Backlight Bleed - There is only 3 noticeable backlight bleeds, including the bottom left, bottom right, and top right zones, but it's barely noticeable in pitch dark and wasn't apparent in gaming.

Brightness - It has a full-screen sustained brightness of 650 nits, which is respectable and sufficient for most content. The flash brightness is over 100 nits, which matches some of the better FALD HDR monitors. Performance-wise, it gives 1100 nits for low window sizes and 650 nits for larger windows. On the other hand, the HDR has a peak brightness of 1000 nits, which marks the first gaming monitor worthy of using HDR with the QLED panel.

Color Accuracy - The color accuracy of the G9 is average in terms of its adherence to the sRGB gamma curve, with total gamma of 2.4, making it look too dark on average. At the same time, the delta E has a mediocre result of 3.0-4.0, which affects saturation. The G9 isn't an ideal monitor for color-accurate work due to its curve and insufficient P3 coverage. However, it can provide a respectable result for sRGB and P3 with the color profile. Additionally, the color gamut accuracy is excellent for both DCI-P3 and sRGB.

Color Accuracy
Source
Color Gamut - he G9 covers 89% of the DC-IP3 color gamut, though not as impressive as most modern IPS monitors, making it insufficient for wide gamut color work. However, it does deliver a larger color gamut for increased saturation and better colors in the HDR mode.

Source
Contrast Ratio - The contrast ratio of the G9 is unimpressive for a VA panel, while in 2001, it was higher than IPS and TN monitors, but it's behind the best VA panels. But it has a decent contrast ratio that makes blacks look grayish in the dark. It's lower than the advertised 2500:1; however, it can vary between individual units. The local dimming doesn't do much in SDR, as the contrast remains almost unchanged, and it's much lower when enabled in HDR, as the large vertical dimming zones also light up the black squares, causing the contrast to drop to 446:1. In regular content, the contrast is expected to drop with local dimming enabled.

HDR - The G9 has a decent HDR color gamut with great DCI P3 color space coverage, though the Rec. 2020 coverage is limited. But the DCI P3 coverage is lower than the advertised 95%. Performance-wise, it doesn't display dark colors well due to its lower contrast ratio and has difficulty with bright blues, which is typical for LCDs. Its HDR peak brightness is great, which varies depending on the scene, but overall, bright enough to deliver a great HDR experience. Additionally, it's advertised with a VESA HDR1000 certification, which requires 1000cd/m² brightness in the peak 100% window, so it's only slightly below.

RTINGS.com - Samuel Breton, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/23/2020
Picture Quality - Local dimming is a toggle, off, or auto. At the same time, Dynamic Contrast has two levels, the more aggressive of which grays out the brightness control and makes the picture vivid, which is used for games or videos but only for short periods. At the same time, the Standard option is easier on the eyes, allows brightness adjustments, and increases contrast without clipping any highlight or shadow detail.

Resolution - The G9 has a screen equivalent to 2 27", 16:9 screens combined, which delivers an immersive gaming experience and provides plenty of space for multitasking. The pixel density makes images and text look sharp. However, not all games support a 32:9 aspect ratio, so black bars may be on the side, or images may be stretched out. Performance-wise, it only has 120Hz and 60Hz refresh rates. If your graphics card supports it properly, you can get a 5120x1442, 44Hz performance. The Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55T is a smaller alternative, which has a 21:9 aspect ratio.

ShortCircuit

07/09/2020

SDR - Brightness in the SDR mode has a peak of over 400 nits, while the minimum is at 60 nits. It has an exceptional SDR color volume and outstanding SDR color gamut that covers nearly the entire sRGB color space and has great coverage of the Adobe RGB color space. However, it has trouble displaying dark colors as the contrast ratio is decent. Performance-wise, the brightness is consistent across different content and is bright enough to overcome glare in bright lighting conditions. Additionally, it can reach a peak of 639 cd/m² in the 10% window, but only in the 'High Brightness' Picture Mode with Local Dimming and Dynamic Brightness enabled.

RTINGS.com - Samuel Breton, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/23/2020
sRGB - The sRGB is the best solution if you need accuracy. Performance-wise, the material doesn't look oversaturated, with 88% coverage of DCI-P3 SDR. Additionally, the HDR can be used without penalty, and the brightness control is available to dial down the output. Still, the Windows desktop won't look harsh even when set at maximum.

Tom'sHARDWARE - Christian Eberle

06/15/2021
Viewing Angle - The G9 has sub-par horizontal viewing angles where images look washed out from the sides, which isn't ideal for sharing content or playing co-op games. Additionally, vertical viewing angles are sub-par, which causes images to look inaccurate if mounted above eye level. Plus, sitting too close will make edges look inaccurate, although the screen's curvature can help mitigate the issue.

Flicker - The G9 uses Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) to dim the backlight; however, the flickering frequency is high but shouldn't be visible. When HDR is enabled at 240Hz, the flickering is more visible, but it can be managed by turning the sync off and setting the response time to either faster or fastest. Additionally, the flickering issue is not present at 120hz, and the G9 doesn't work with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX30 series GPUs at 240hz with the latest drivers, which is an NVIDIA driver issue as the display does work on 20 series cards that support DSC.

Input Lag - There's a 4.4ms input lag in the G9, and for high-end gaming monitors, input lags should only be at 2ms or lower. However, it does exceed a performance comparable to TVs but is still not impressive for a gaming monitor. Additionally, input lag is good with no processing delay on the monitor side and when backed with fast response times and a high refresh rate with a total lag in the chain of below 5ms. However, input lag is higher in 60hz mode, reaching 25.3ms to 27.2ms after 2 minutes.

Motion - The pixel load was enough for the GeForce RTX 3090 to not max the framerate at 240 FPS, but it stayed around 200 FPS, which is more than enough to keep the action smooth. Also, the overdrive became grayed out with Adaptive-Sync on, and motion blur was visually non-existent.

Refresh Rate - The 240 Hz refresh rate is a noticeable change from a 144 Hz monitor. Performance-wise, it causes text fringing at max refresh rate but is not noticeable in gaming, and it contributes to delivering a smooth and responsive gaming experience. Plus, it has nearly 90% of the pixel count of a 4k monitor but a far higher refresh rate than any 4k display. Additionally, it's VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified, supports FreeSync, and is compatible with G-Sync. However, some limitations include the maximum refresh rate being limited to 60Hz over HDMI, VRR isn't available, and over DisplayPort, it's only possible to get 240Hz with graphics cards that have the Display Stream Compression (DSC) feature, such as NVIDIA RTX 20- Series cards and AMD 5300 or newer.

Compatibility MacOS & Windows - On Mac, it can run at 120 Hz in native resolution, and the Tiles feature can be used to split-screen into three parts. The best experience on Mac was that the native iOS split-screen as it can run Youtube and Netflix in full-screen mode with the ability to manually adjust the split size. On Windows, it can use a full native resolution at 240 Hz with G-Sync and enabled HDR with 10-bit without any flickers. Using the Virtual Display Manager in Windows enabled viewing of Youtube and Netflix in full-screen mode and the ability to split screens in the desired ways. In comparison, every UFO test succeeded in Windows but not Mac, as it failed the inversion test with flashing colors and flickers. Performance-wise, the monitor on firmware 1010.2 had no issues with backlight bleed, dead pixels, or flickers and was working at 240 Hz with G- Sync. However, there are clicking and popping sounds from the corners, and the monitor runs hot that it requires a fan to cool off. Plus, there's a burning smell after prolonged usage of the monitor (8 - 10 hrs straight).

Custom Picture Mode - The Custom picture mode works well for all content but with extra color saturation. Also, the G9 can be calibrated in its Custom picture mode, but there's little effect as the monitor also comes out of the box in a very accurate state. Thus, there's no way and need to make improvements via calibration.

OSD - The on-screen display is navigated via the directional toggle control located underneath the monitor and has a smooth interface. The crosshairs, black boosting modes, color controls, and picture-in-picture modes are included. Additionally, you can toggle the refresh rate from 60Hz, 120Hz to 240 Hz, turn adaptive sync on/off, and toggle response time from standard faster to fastest, showing a current settings chart. Also, it has the same control panel look as other Odyssey G-series screens.

Overdrive Mode - It has a single overdrive mode experience for variable refresh gaming, a requirement for high-end displays. The lack of access to overdrive settings isn't too problematic.

Video Processing - The G9's video processing is covered with FreeSync and G-Sync Compatibility certification from AMD and Nvidia. Both function at 240 Hz with HDR, and the panel has a native 10-bit color depth for smooth picture gradients.

Wall Mounting - A TV wall mount with 8 screws is better than a monitor wall mount for mounting the G9.

Gaming Experience - The G9 offers a unique gaming experience with its 1000R curve that creates an immersive environment around the user that it's not as different from VR goggles if room lights are turned off. Also, adding a good speaker or headphones will improve the sensory experience when playing first-person games. In Tomb Raider, adapting was easy to pick up action to the outer sides of the screen. However, enemy attacks also give an edge when approaching structures.

Color Space - The G9 exceeds the gamut while staying balanced, even if magenta leans warmly. The G9 also covers the DCI-P3 digital cinema color space well. As for the color performance, the G9 performed well with its QLED technology, allowing a very wide color gamut. Specifically, it covers 90.2% of the gamut in Cinema mode, reaching farther in the reds but slightly undersaturated for greens. This is comparable to the performance with Adobe RGB color space. The only caveat is it undershoots greens and overshoots reds, even more, covering only 85% of the gamut. For contrast, the local dimming array will fully switch off the backlight to show black, which results in a very high flash versus black contrast that exceeds the capabilities of testing tools. It also has an advantage in the single frame contrast due to the panel size. A bright element on the left side of the display can be shown at up to 1100 nits, while a dark area on the right side could have the FALD backlight fully switched off, delivering 0 nits, and there's no bleed between these zones.

Display - Switching the panel to Full Bright mode will put out 716 nits with a full field, with a black level of 0.118 nits, and a contrast ratio of 6,079:1. The G9 showed good contrast for a monitor, displaying a peak brightness of 193 nits, a black level of 0.052 at default, and a contrast ratio of 3,742:1.

HDR - The G9 is a semi-HDR panel, and it has some areas that are superior to regular SDR displays, like a wider color gamut and high peak brightness. Still, it lacks a strong contrast ratio as it only features 10-edge bit local dimming zones, which is insufficient for such a large display.

Pixel Response Time - The G9 advertised with a greater gray switching time of 1 ms. However, in actual use, the pixel response times vary depending on the value the pixel is starting at and driving toward.

Media Creation - The G9 is good for content creators with its large screen and high resolution, allowing multiple windows to be opened side-by-side. It handles reflections well, gets bright enough to overcome glare, and has near full coverage of the sRGB color space and decent color accuracy out-of-the-box. However, it has narrow viewing angles and sub-par ergonomics.

Productivity - It allows numerous windows to be opened, which increases productivity, and it has a picture-in-picture mode, which is handy for photo and video editing.

  • Positive

G9 vs ASUS TUF 34” - The Asus TUF 34" is an ultrawide monitor with a consistent average latency of 3ms-4ms, while it is reported the G9's latency increases after 2 or 3 minutes and up to 20ms, especially on 60hz. Performance-wise, the G9 is a great office monitor, but for 1500, the performance is mediocre. On the other hand, the ASUS TUF 34" has better contrast, response time, colors, a more sensible 21:9 screen, and 165hz, at only $500. Also, HDR gets as bright as 520 nits.

Dead Pixel - Single dead pixel was a non-factor as it was not noticeable unless you were looking for it, and on a panel of its size, a few dead pixels is fully understandable.

Display - Peak brightness is okay but doesn't get as bright as the advertised HDR1000, and contrast is disappointing for a VA panel due to the local dimming. The HDR colorspace and volume are also terrible, with a latency of 2.4ms on average, which is good for everyday use, but not for high-end play, and a visible pattern of horizontal lines for $1500, that's unacceptable.

Quality Control - Samsung released the monitor in a stable state with no QC issues. It's also risky to buy from retailers.

Issues - Instead of pushing up to a 2ms average response time, the G9 would dial back the overdrive to reduce overshoot though there is no dark-level smearing, as Samsung seems to have resolved the issue. However, with the latest generation of VA panels, the overshoot is highest in the dark regions, but the sluggish responses in the 0 to 40 grey range are non-existent.

Lack - Some things to be aware of before buying the G9 are the lack of a USB-C port on the back and the 240 Hertz only running on a specific graphics card.
