The Samsung Odyssey G5 is the least expensive from the series as it focuses more on value rather than raw performance. Still, the G5 provides a good gaming experience with its 32″ VA panel, 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and 1000R curvature. It’s also the cheapest 1440p 140Hz monitor in the market. Additionally, it has a 27″ variant.

Value for Money - Despite the poor build quality minus the plastic material, it has good brightness, HDR performance, color reproduction, sRGB coverage, and contrast ratio for deep blacks. For $300, it's worth the price as long as you don't mind the lack of articulation.

Specifications & Design - The panel has a good response time, 240Hz with variable refresh rate, 4k and 1440p, an accurate color panel, and VRR. These specifications allow it to handle competitive gaming. Also, the curvature is noticeable from the sides, quite bulgy at the back, protruding 20cm from the stand, and has average controls.

Panel Display - The panel gives much space to work on and is also good gaming-wise. The colors are brilliant, the pictures are sharp, and even without the RTX, it can still perform well.

Curvature - The G5 is a great option for those who want the immersive curve, and the gigabyte offering is a good alternative for those who don't mind the curve. Plus, it has better brightness.

Issue - The monitor had a black smear issue that was supposed to be removed by an update, but it was hard to fix as there were a lot of requirements, including the file that should be placed in a tool-formatted USB.

Preference - The G5 is a great option for those looking for a monitor with better IPS and TN panel contrast ratios and good media consumption, but it is mediocre to other VA panels. Nonetheless, investing in a panel with faster response times for users who play competitive shooters is better.

Comparison vs G7 - The G5 variant is the affordable variant of the G7 series. With the G5, Samsung delivered a functional yet budget-friendly gaming monitor. Though it's stripped off many features from the G7, the cons are the low peak brightness and limited tilt adjustments. In addition, it has a lower response time and refresh rate, less saturated colors, and no proper HDR support. However, it does offer a decent viewing and gaming experience for its price if you prefer a 1000R screen curvature.

Overview - The G5 is a budget-friendly 32" monitor with great picture clarity and decent gaming performance. It has a 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms MPRT, and allows the playing of fast-paced shooters. Also, it provides an excellent immersive experience with its specs and 1000R curvature.

WePC - Charlie Noon

11/03/2022
Alternatives - The G7 set a high bar for the pixel response time, which made the G5 look lacking. Overall, the C32G5 and C27G5 are still the better alternatives for an aggressively-curved design monitor if you can't afford the G7.

Display Ninja - ROB SHAFER

04/30/2021
Drawbacks - The G5 is neither an HDR display with 400 nits nor 10-bit color. This makes it disappointing after the release of the G7 and G9 as it doesn't even have the lowest HDR spec, which is HDR 400. Its 144Hz is barely different from 75Hz in terms of motion clarity. The ghosting, motion blur, and black smearing can also be unbearable after a while. The coating also makes the monitor look washed out and yellow. A VA/IPS panel from MSI or LG would be better than the G5.

Reviews - Reviews are scarce for the G5, even after the hype from the G7.

Stand - The stand of the monitor does offer stability but not from a versatility and adjustment standpoint. It doesn't have a height, tilt, swivel, or pivot functionality. In terms of build, it's purely plastic with no metal, takes up a lot of desk space with its V-shape, and offers a small hook for cable management routing. Installation-wise it's easy, but removing it is hard. Performance-wise, it allows tilt adjustments of -2 degrees to +18 degrees, which makes using a monitor arm better. Additionally, it's VESA mount compatible.

Ergonomics - The monitor has terrible ergonomics that only allow a narrow tilt adjustment, which makes it hard to set at an ideal viewing angle. Also, the inputs are all bottom-facing. Additionally, the G3 will offer better ergonomics than the G5.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

Backlight Bleed - The backlight bleed isn't noticeable when room lights are turned on. However, in dark rooms, it is noticeable.

Backlight Bleed

Brightness - Although the G5 supports HDR content, it only supports HDR10 Protocol without a backlight. Since it has a lower peak brightness of 250 nits, playing games in HDR doesn't show much difference, especially in bright areas. Plus, it's hard for 2 people to watch it without the image being slightly distorted. Overall, the maximum brightness is enough for optimal viewing, but the display may be hard to see in a bright area with a lot of sunlight or light.

Color Accuracy - In color accuracy tests, the white point scored 6164K, while both black depth and contrast ratio were solid. However, the color accuracy had an average score of 1.69, with the gamma set at 2.21. Pre-calibration, the color accuracy gave an average delta E of 2.79, which means colors will be as they're supposed to be. Color reproduction is accurate, not as vibrant, and oversaturated, as found on IPS panels and QLED screens. Still, it's more than enough for games and general media consumption.

WePC - Charlie Noon

11/03/2022
Color Accuracy
Source
Contrast Ratio - It doesn't have a contrast ratio as high as its competitors, but the blacks are similar because the brightness is not as high. However, it's better than an IPS screen with its 2500:1 ratio. Overall, the blacks look black and not gray in a dark room.

Contrast Ratio
Source
Display - It has about 93 pixels per inch for a 32" screen, like a 1080p 24" monitor. Also, it doesn't come with Samsung's QLED display technology, limiting it to 16.7 million colors. However, it can deliver crystal clear and sharp images with its high contrast ratio.

FPS Preset - The FPS preset had a bluish hue, although the white point is good at 6648K, as black depth was 0.12, contrast ratio of 2128:1, worst delta E at 3.2, and gamma at 2.17.

FPS Preset

Ghosting - The ghosting is not much different from ASUS and Gigabytes offerings. Also, it's minimal enough not to ruin the experience when playing a high-paced game. It's only visible at most in darker scenes and behind fast-moving objects, but the motion blur option can manage it in games.

Type-C Tech Reviews

05/14/2021

HDR - Due to the low peak brightness, the highlights in HDR content don't stand out, which makes the experience not worthy. It also cannot display a wide color gamut and has mediocre coverage in DCI-P3 and rec. 2020. Additionally, it has difficulty displaying bright, dark, and saturated colors.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

SDR - The SDR has a decent peak brightness, except that it's a 2% dimmer window because of frame dimming. However, it's still not enough to overcome intense glare. Additionally, colors are less vibrant and saturated but more accurate when watching sRGB content. It has excellent coverage of sRGB color space with decent coverage for Adobe RGB color space, allowing professional use. However, it has trouble producing bright colors but not dark colors.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/26/2021
Viewing Angle - The G5 has a sub-par horizontal viewing angle, which makes images look inaccurate when viewed from the side, while the vertical angle makes the screen look washed out if set above or below eye level. Overall, the viewing angles of the G5 are not the best, as viewed from 35 degrees angle causes the brightness to darken and color to shift.

WePC - Charlie Noon

Backlight Strobing - The strobing backlight feature is used to improve motion clarity. However, it can't be used simultaneously as the variable refresh rate. When enabled, the screen becomes darker, which may make it hard to navigate the on-screen menu. Unplugging the monitor will make it return to normal brightness.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/26/2021
Backlight - The backlight is flicker-free and has an integrated low-blue light filter.

Display Ninja - ROB SHAFER

Black Uniformity - The amount of backlight from the top and bottom edges makes the entire screen look gray.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/26/2021
Color Gamut - It supports an 8-bit color depth for 16.7 million colors and covers 94.5% of standard sRGB color space, which fell 5% short of what was claimed. However, there's no wide color gamut support, especially in Adobe and DCI-P3. Not recommendable for professional editors with its poor blue/pink coverage. Overall, it does well for media consumption but is not recommended for professional use.

Display Ninja - ROB SHAFER

WePC - Charlie Noon

11/03/2022
Color Space - The G5 covers 92% of sRGB color space, 66% of Adobe RGB, and 69% of DCI-P3 color space. It's enough for amateur use but not for professional use.

Bijan Jamshidi

11/05/2020
Dynamic Contrast - The Dynamic Contrast preset offers a 6167K white point, a black depth of 0.12, and a 2258:1 contrast ratio with an average DeltaE of 2.26 on average.

WePC - Charlie Noon

11/03/2022
Gradient - The G5 provides great gradient handling with a tiny amount of banding in the darker shades of gray, red, and green. It's not noticeable in most content.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/26/2021
Gray Uniformity - There's an excellent gray uniformity though it's darker on the right edge but isn't noticeable. Also, there's almost no dirty effect.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/26/2021
Image Quality - The G5 features a 31.5" screen with a 2560x1440 Quad HD resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 93 PPI.

Display Ninja - ROB SHAFER

04/30/2021
Local Dimming - It doesn't have a local dimming feature.

10/26/2021
Panel Uniformity - The G5 had a near-perfect score in terms of panel uniformity.

WePC - Charlie Noon

11/03/2022
Reflections - The reflection handling is good with its matte anti-reflective coating that diffuses bright reflections well. However, visibility can still be an issue in bright places due to low brightness.

RTINGS.com - Thomas Hervieu, Nicholas Di Giovanni, and Yannick Khong

10/26/2021
Text Clarity - The G5 has decent text clarity with the Windows ClearType, which helps with diagonal lines.

VRR synchronizes the monitor's refresh rate with the GPU frame rate to eliminate screen tearing and stuttering. However, the flickering brightness issue in FreeSync has affected monitors.

On-Screen Display - The OSD menu is user-friendly and easy to navigate via the directional joystick. It provides access to quick display options, quick source, and more options, including the power, eye saver, and menu. However, the refresh rate setting doesn't show the active refresh rate but only the maximum setting.

Overdrive Mode - There are 3 overdrive modes, including the standard, which doesn't push the pixels to transition fast enough; the faster, which eliminates most ghosting without overshoot; and fastest, which pushes pixels to create pixel overshoot and offers the clearest motion clarity but sacrifices picture brightness, and it can't be active at the same time as FreeSync. Performance-wise, the overdrive doesn't seem to so much, but it does help the overall result when set on fastest.

Settings - “The menu system is actually really really good not quite on the level of lg's but it's almost there it uses a single joystick to navigate which is really easy to use it's quick to turn the monitor off it's quick to change any settings if you want to turn freezing on or off or change the response times or the color profiles it has a bunch of that stuff and you can change all that stuff very easy it's pretty basic stuff but it's easy to do with that joystick.”

Media Consumption - The G5 works best in media consumption and content creation. The G5 has a VESA 600 certification for its brightness of 300, which is impressive for its specs. Its display will also be enjoyable enough for an average person who's not used to OLED TVs.

Performance - The G5 has a good dynamic range and vibrant colors, which is ideal for gaming, not video editing. The monitor looks great right out of the box but tweaking the brightness, sharpness, and contrast will improve it, along with the NVIDIA control panel. Though there are small issues with ghosting and the stand, overall, it's still a great buy.

Pixel Response Time - Its pixel response time is 1ms MPRT, which means nothing as you can't utilize it to tell the actual response time. Additionally, the pixel response time has 4 settings to choose from. Performance-wise, it's not the best choice for story-based non-competitive games.

Issue - The G5 is the same price as the LC27JG54QQEXXT, but the quality is nowhere near as good. Only after 2 months, the screen is already coming off the curved frame. It's just stuck on with cheap glue, and the force from curving the plastic screen is prying it off.
