It’s an IPS gaming monitor that delivers immersive image quality, smooth performance, and features. The unit from Amazon came with no dead pixels or major defects aside from some IPS glow on the bottom left corner. On the other hand, the G-Sync works great, and the colors look great, but the low contrast makes the blacks look grey. It has no dead pixels and a noticeable backlight bleed. However, there’s a noticeable glow in the bottom left corner during dark screens, but it may be due to the seating proximity as it goes away when the user moves back.

Comfort - Coming from a 24" or smaller monitor will tire your eyes with the LG, and it may even cause headaches. To reduce such, setting zoom on Chrome at 150% and increasing desktop icon size to 125% helps, especially when browsing text-based sites like Reddit. The issue doesn't apply to LG but to other monitors that are 27". Another thing to remember is that 1080p YouTube videos won't look good; only 1440p or 4K videos will look fine.

Highlights - With its simple design, subtle gaming look, great display, 144Hz refresh rate, and G-Sync that matches well with gaming, the 27-inch LG 27GL83A-B is a capable gaming monitor. No need to look for other options if the screen size is enough for you.

Overview - It's a 27-inch gaming monitor with great color accuracy and an approachable price tag, making it an easy recommendation for gamers and creatives. Also, the sleek design makes it easy on the eyes. It's a good 1440p IPS screen that delivers a great gaming experience with low input lag, outstanding response time, and few gaming features. It supports AMD's FreeSync variable refresh rate technology and is also NVIDIA-certified to support VRR. Additionally, it has wide viewing angles, good reflection handling, and good peak brightness, so glare shouldn't be an issue. It has a basic stand with limited ergonomics and no RGB lighting for an affordable price. Although it supports HDR, it doesn't add much, as it can't get bright enough and has a low contrast ratio to deliver a true HDR experience.

Anti-Glare - There's no RGB lighting, while the monitor has a low-haze anti-glare, matte coating, which effectively eliminates reflections, but doesn't make the picture grainy. Also, it has good reflection handling with a matte finish that diffuses reflections well, reducing their intensity. However, glare might still be an issue in a very bright room.

Borders - The borders are thin and not distracting, while the bottom bezel is slightly thicker.

Material - The build quality is decent. Although it is mostly made of plastic, it doesn't feel cheap as there are no gaps or loose ends. This monitor has a decent build quality.

Design - The design is similar to the monitors in LG's UltraGear lineup and looks almost identical to the 27GL850. The height and tilt adjustment are decent, but it can't swivel. Overall, it has a design that consists of ultra-thin matte-black bezels and subtle 'gamely-red' color accents.

Connectivity - Its connectivity options include a DisplayPort 1.4, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, an auxiliary input for the monitor itself, a power port, a headphone jack, and a service-only USB port for firmware updates. Both DP and HDMI support 144Hz at 1440p, but if FreeSync is enabled, the refresh rate is limited to 100Hz over HDMI. However, there's no USB hub. On the other hand, the LG 27GL83A-B has an HDMI port and DisplayPort for video output on the back of the monitor. Also, the 38" LG 38GL950G-B has the same video ports. Still, it has an upstream USB 3.0 port, a pair of downstream USB 3.0 ports for charging the smartphone and other peripherals, and a headphone/mic jack for plugging a gaming headset directly into the monitor, but no dedicated headphone and mic jacks.

Stand - The stand is sturdy and offers decent ergonomics, including up to 110mm height adjustment, 90° pivot, -5°/15° tilt, and 100x100mm VESA mount compatibility, but it can't be swiveled left and right. Performance-wise, it supports the monitor well with minimal wobbles. However, it has a wide footprint that only allows you to place small objects in front of it.

Color Accuracy - The 83A will offer better color accuracy in games and other non-wide gamut content, except for tasks requiring a wide color.

Color Accuracy
Source
Contrast Ratio - As an IPS panel without local dimming, the contrast ratio rarely surpasses 1,000:1, meaning that blacks won't be as deep as VA panel displays with ~3,000:1, but they don't have as vibrant colors or good viewing angles as IPS panels. Moreover, they have slower response times resulting in visible smearing in fast-paced games. The Gigabyte G32QC is a good monitor with a higher contrast ratio.

Display Ninja - Rob Shafer

01/26/2022
Contrast Ratio
Source
Display - The 1440p resolution ensures crisp details and plenty of screen real estate on the 27″ monitor thanks to the ~108 PPI, which eliminates the need for scaling. Performance-wise, it's great for multitasking and delivers a more detailed gaming experience. Overall, it's a midrange monitor designed for gamers and creatives. It can easily be mistaken as a TV, especially due to its wide 16:9 aspect ratio, which renders content across a wide canvas.

Display Ninja - Rob Shafer

01/26/2022
Display
Source
HDR - It supports HDR. However, the performance is disappointing. The HDR color gamut is decent but not enough to make highlights pop, and it can't produce bright highlights in HDR as there's no local dimming to boost areas of the screen. But it has a good HDR color gamut, decent HDR color volume, 98% DCI-P3 color space coverage used in most current HDR content, and decent coverage for wider Rec. 2020 color space that's not future-proof. However, it's limited by the low contrast ratio, preventing it from displaying saturated colors at low luminance levels and filling out the entire color gamut. Also, peak brightness in HDR is okay with a little variation with different content, and it's not bright enough to deliver a true cinematic HDR experience.

RTINGS com

11/27/2019
Image Flicker - It has a completely flicker-free backlight at all brightness levels.

RTINGS.com - Alexander Tozzi, Adam Babcock, and Yannick Khong

Image Flicker
Source
IPS Glow - A disadvantage of IPS panels is IPS glow, which causes glowing around the corners when watching dark scenes in a dark room, but it's manageable. Also, if you want great image quality with fast pixel response time, IPS are the way to go.

Display Ninja - Rob Shafer

01/26/2022
IPS Glow
Source
sRGB - It has a native 99% sRGB color gamut that doesn't oversaturate colors. It can display ~135% sRGB, despite having only ~99% sRGB specified, but only when displaying HDR content. This provides extra color vibrancy when watching HDR content and accurate colors when viewing sRGB content. Additionally, it's factory-calibrated, and the colors are accurate and precise, and even fit for some entry-level color-critical work.

Display Ninja - Rob Shafer

01/26/2022
Text Clarity - Using the ClearType makes diagonal lines clearer, while the text clarity is already decent.

RTINGS.com - Alexander Tozzi, Adam Babcock, and Yannick Khong

Source
Viewing Angle - It's an IPS panel that provides good viewing angles. Performance-wise, it's great to view upfront or even at an angle because of the larger angle to the edges. The horizontal viewing angle is good, as expected from an IPS panel. It doesn't lose image accuracy, and the vertical viewing angle is also okay though sitting close to it will make edges appear darker, but it shouldn't be a problem.

FreeSync & G-Sync - AMD FreeSync is supported with a 48-144Hz VRR via DisplayPort and 48-100Hz over HDMI for tear-free gameplay. It's also certified as G-SYNC compatible by NVIDIA, so FreeSync will work without issue with compatible NVIDIA GPUs.

Overdrive Mode - The response time can be adjusted through 4 overdrive modes. The 'Off' results in the slowest response time but without any chance of overshoot artifacts, while 'Fast' produces no overshoot nor visible trailing behind fast-moving objects. Hence, increasing the setting through 'Normal,' 'Fast,' and 'Faster' will result in a faster response time but also increase the amount of overshoot present, which can be visible as inverse ghosting that follows moving objects. Although the speed is not 1ms technically, it's enough to keep the pixels up with the 144Hz refresh rate. The input lag is only ~4ms, which makes an imperceptible delay between actions and the result on the screen.

Input Lag - A low input lag is important to reduce the delay between an action in-game and the result on the screen. The LG monitor has a very low input lag, at ~4ms for native resolution and refresh rate, which is excellent, and in line with other 144Hz monitors. However, the 60Hz input lag is slower but is normal for all monitors. It has an outstanding low input lag, even with VRR or HDR enabled.

Pixel Response Time - It's one of the fastest IPS panel monitors with a 1ms pixel response time speed, which prevents ghosting in fast-paced games. Specifically, setting the overdrive to 'Faster' will give the 1ms speed. However, it will introduce inverse ghosting or pixel overshoot.

Refresh Rate - It has a 144Hz refresh rate, which is great for fast-paced gaming, helps in a smooth and responsive motion, and allows a low input lag. Also, it supports AMD's FreeSync variable refresh rate and is NVIDIA-certified as G-SYNC compatible, but the latter only works over DP. Overall performance is good, with each plot at 144 Hz.

Response Time - It has a good response time of 60Hz, which is great for console gaming. Unlike in max refresh rate, the recommended Response Time setting is 'Normal' to have less overshoot and motion blur than the 'Fast' setting, but both perform very similarly.

Media Creation - It's a good monitor for media creation with its high resolution and large size, which make it easier to see more of the project at once. Unfortunately, it's hard to comfortably position the monitor, but once fixed, you'll enjoy a very responsive experience due to the low input lag. Also, the image remains accurate at the sides even when you sit up close to examine the details of your work.

RTINGS.com - Alexander Tozzi, Adam Babcock, and Yannick Khong

07/21/2021
Multimedia - It's a good monitor with a great resolution, size, and wide viewing angle, delivering a more immersive movie-watching experience. Also, the input lag is very low, making it feel very responsive. However, positioning the monitor comfortably is hard, and it's not as good in dark rooms due to the low contrast and bad black uniformity.

07/21/2021
Office - It's a good monitor for office use with its 27" 1440p screen, which is great for multitasking. Viewing angles are also excellent, with no side screen fading if you sit too close. However, it's hard to place comfortably due to its ergonomics, but it can be placed in a bright area without issue due to its good reflection handling and peak brightness.

LG 27GL83A vs ASUS ROG Swift PG279QZ - Comparing an IPS panel with a TN display will be mind-blowing. The colors are great, and it comes calibrated out of the box. The PG279QZ, even after years, can still hold its own but has terrible backlight bleed in the corner. On the other hand, the LG has a somewhat pale color that can be fixed by calibration, but it has an accurate color that does give a pop, although it seems a little too white. Also, there's an IPS glow that won't show dark scenes as a VA would. On the bright side, it has no backlight bleed.

LG 27GL83A vs Dell S2721DGF - Dell is better by specs: 165 Hz, higher brightness, a newer panel, and 10 local dimming zones, which might be helpful in HDR mode. However, Dell has very high-frequency image flickering, but not noticeable by most people, but I've seen some reviews where people say they are tired after using this monitor. In comparison, Dell is 165Hz while LG is 144Hz, brightness in Dell is 400 cd/m² while LG has 350 cd/m², and Dell's stand has a swivel while LG doesn't.

Base Issue - The issues with the LG include its footprint that takes up too much space, which cuts the mouse pad area on a 4x2ft desk. The giant boomerang is almost as wide as the monitor and, at the tips of the boomerang, pokes out about 3+ inches from the front of the monitor. However, the stand doesn't seem unsafe.

Performance Issue - This monitor has been slightly finicky with falling asleep, sometimes saying 'no Display Port signal' before a mouse jostle or key press. Another issue is when doing an alt-tab from a game to YouTube, the browser downsizes to 1080p. On the other hand, everything else works as intended, good colors, 144Hz works fine with no issues, the G-Sync module does its job, and 1ms response time seems accurate, but the HDR claim is not real.
