It’s a 27-inch, 1440p gaming monitor with a fast refresh rate and great gaming features. The IPS panel delivers wide viewing angles with excellent ergonomics. It has a remarkable response time at the max refresh rate, with little blur behind fast-moving objects and a low input lag for responsive gaming and desktop experience. It has great reflection handling and high peak brightness in SDR. However, the factory SDR color accuracy is disappointing, but the SDR color gamut is great. Although it supports HDR and can display a wide color gamut, it can’t get very bright in HDR and has low contrast. Also, Dell offers a 165Hz factory overclock, its characteristic well-built design, and extensive connectivity options. However, there’s no sRGB emulation mode, which would provide accurate colors for sRGB content.

Build & Design - It feels solid and high quality, and the bezels are narrow, which is suitable for multi-monitor setups. Controls are easy to use and solid, have an HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, and allow 1440p 165hz 10bit. The rear blue LED is also a nice touch.

Performance - It has a terrible backlight bleed, but most aren't sensitive to it. It's better overall with a 165hz refresh rate, a great color performance of 95 P3 coverage, high pixel density, outstanding IPS viewing angles, and reasonable factory calibration for grayscale. Also, the panel is the same as LG's 27GL850.

Gaming - It's a 1440p 165Hz gaming monitor based on a Nano IPS panel with a wide color gamut and rapid 1ms GtG pixel response speed. It also offers FreeSync Premium Pro, G-SYNC Compatible, and DisplayHDR 400 certifications. It has a fully ergonomic stand and rich connectivity options but lacks an sRGB emulation mode. It's an excellent monitor great for gaming. For instance, the motion handling is very good with an Xbox Series X on 120 Fps settings and 1440, with adaptive sync turned on. A con, however, is the contrast ratio, which affects night visibility when playing Division 2, with everything sinking into the black and forms difficult to make out, although calibration may help.

Anti-Glare - It has a matte anti-glare coating and high peak brightness, which effectively eliminates reflections without making the picture appear grainy with great reflection handling that should work well in most rooms but may struggle by a window. Another way to combat reflections is the brightness of the monitor.

Backlight Bleed - There's minimal to no backlight bleed or IPS glow that's not muchly noticeable located at the lower corners. In all but most extreme cases, though, it's tolerable and manageable, and it can become more noticeable in a dark room as blacks appear grayish. This varies between units.

Color Accuracy - The color red is oversaturated and appears almost hot red-pink on it. Even after calibrating with the X-Rite i1 Display Pro, it still couldn't get it right. Overall, it's a great gaming monitor but not recommended for graphic work.

Contrast Ratio - Blacks aren't as deep and vivid as VA panel displays, with a contrast ratio of ~3,000:1. Other disadvantages include slower response speed and inconsistent colors. But the contrast ratio looks great on regular gameplay. Specifically, the contrast ratio is 1,000:1, and the aspect ratio is 16:9, but the contrast ratio feels a bit iffy, and a few mushy areas still look crisp.

Display Ninja - ROB SHAFER

Local Dimming - It has a sub-par contrast makes blacks look gray in a dark room. It measured 882:1 to 971:1 on a test, which isn't good. But, contrast varies between individual units. The local dimming feature is only available in HDR, allowing sections of the backlight to be switched on/off. Still, due to the limited number of zones, it's not as good, but it allows significant blooming around bright objects in the dark scenes due to the large area of each dimming zone.

Display - The monitor has a 27-inch matte IPS screen that runs at 165Hz via DisplayPort and can run at 144Hz via HDMI cable. But using it with the latest consoles like the Xbox Series X or a PS5 will only run at 120Hz. At the same time, the 1440p or 2K display will give crisp gameplay and great image output. It's also VESA display HDR400 certified, which ensures high clarity and amazing contrast.

HDR - The monitor supports HDR and has VESA's DisplayHDR 400 certification. For HDR content, it has a 74% P3 color space and 70% rec 2020 color space coverage. The IPS Technology has a 98% DCI-P3 rating, an estimated 1000:1 contrast ratio, and a peak brightness of 400 nits, meaning it will handle games and creativity tasks well. Still, it's not enough for a true cinematic HDR experience. To get the most of the 400 nits of brightness, the panel also supports HDR400, which is effective at making highlights pop. Performance-wise, when games throw an HDR signal, it automatically activates HDR mode. However, the HDR color volume can't display dark saturated colors well and can't fill out its gamut, especially in bright scenes. Overall, the decent brightness and wide color gamut make some HDR content look better, but the lack of local dimming, low contrast ratio, and brightness make HDR content look sub-par. Additionally, a ComfortView mode reduces blue light to improve eye comfort.

Image Flicker - The backlight doesn't use pulse width modulation to dim the backlight but a high-frequency flicker. Performance-wise, it has about 20kHz flicker that isn't noticeable in person.

Resolution - It features the WQHD resolution with 2560×1440 pixels, which results in a high pixel density of ~109 PPI. As a result, it has crisp detail and text and plenty of screen real estate without any scaling necessary. It's also great for multitasking and delivers a sharper image for gaming, which allows fine details in games to be seen.

SDR - It has a great SDR color gamut, with complete coverage of the sRGB color space, good coverage of the wider Adobe RGB color space, and nearly perfect coverage of the sRGB color space. Performance-wise, it works great for regular web viewing and for professionals needing a color-accurate screen. The color volume is great, as it can display most colors at a wide range of luminance levels. However, the low contrast ratio hinders it from displaying dark saturated colors well. Also, the peak brightness only varies slightly with different scenes.

sRGB - The software clamp in Radeon drivers for an AMD GPU or the novideo_srgb third-party tool in NVIDIA GPU can work around ~100% sRGB. Specifically, it covers 98% DCI-P3 color space, equivalent to 135% sRGB, resulting in a vibrant and vivid color, especially of reds and greens. However, when watching sRGB content, the colors appear over-saturated.

Viewing Angle - It has an IPS panel that fails in contrast ratio but excels in viewing angles. Good viewing angles mean that the colors and brightness do not deteriorate at various angles. Horizontally, it performs excellently with no issues at an off angle from the center of the monitor, with the images remaining accurate, making it a great choice for screen sharing. However, the vertical viewing angle is mediocre, degrades faster than the horizontal viewing angle, and is worse than most IPS monitors. Sharing the screen will be hard as colors and brightness look blander on this angle.

Input Lag - The input lag is at 3.7ms at 165Hz and 11.1ms at 60Hz, and when combined with a higher refresh rate, it allows the monitor to update images more often for more responsive inputs. Overall, input lag is a non-issue on this monitor. Also, it has AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support that works with any port and is G-Sync compatible but only via DisplayPort, so it works by default with NVIDIA GPUs.

Overdrive - Using the Extreme overdrive mode with disabled adaptive sync will lead to much worse results. Hence, enabling the adaptive sync will switch to using a more modest set of overdrive settings. There are three overdrive modes: Fast, Super Fast, and Extreme. The Extreme mode is generally too aggressive and introduces too much inverse ghosting. In contrast, the Super Fast mode works better by preventing trailing behind fast-moving objects without adding overshoot across the entire refresh rate range.

Refresh Rate - That 165Hz refresh rate has become essential to PC gaming, as has variable refresh rate (VRR) technology, which helps keep the screen perfectly in sync with the graphics card's frame rate output, eliminating stutter and tearing. This monitor has a high refresh rate, great for gaming, supports AMD's FreeSync VRR, and is NVIDIA-certified for G-SYNC compatibility. Performance-wise, over HDMI, the maximum refresh rate is 144Hz, and at 165Hz when at 1440p over DisplayPort. As I mentioned in the video, the highest refresh rate you can get when plugged in through HDMI is 144Hz at 1440p.

Color Performance - It's great for P3 work with a Delta E result of around 2.0 mark, which is strong but limited by the upper range of reds and greens, which aren't fully covered. It also has 1.07 billion colors, a 100% coverage of sRGB, 83% of Adobe RGB, and 95% of DCI-P3 color space.

HDR Gaming - It's decent for HDR gaming due to the remarkable response time and low input lag. The low brightness and contrast ration prevent highlights from standing out, and the limited number of zones makes the local dimming feature ineffective.

Overdrive Gaming - Keeping the monitor on extreme mode with adaptive sync allows it to deliver good results above 60Hz. Switching to super fast is only considered when gaming at or below 60Hz, which still provides great performance.

Performance - IPS-type panels previously lacked in response time, but now they have matured and can perform as well as a gaming monitor should. The result is excellent image quality in a panel at 165Hz, with a GtG pixel response time of 1ms.

Usage - It works great for gaming and productivity; at that price point, it's a no-brainer. The monitor is versatile enough for gaming and work/school-related tasks. It can generally be used for things that need a crisp display with vivid colors. However, its contrast ratio is below average.

Alternatives - There are a lot of excellent 27″ 1440p 144Hz-165Hz IPS gaming monitors available at different prices, including the MSI MAG274QRF-QD with a wider Adobe RGB color gamut, support for MBR, and a slightly higher contrast ratio, while the Dell S2721DGF, MSI's MAG274QF, G273QF/QPF models, and LG's 27GP850/83B and 27GL850/83A models are some of the cheaper alternatives with excellent image quality and performance with small differences, at a price difference of up to ~$100 when on sale.

Dell S2721DGF vs Asus TUF VG27AQL1A - The Dell has a perfect blend of gaming and work productivity, connected to a laptop via HDMI running at 60Hz, resulting in a smooth experience, and runs at 165Hz over DisplayPort. On the other hand, the ASUS TUF VG27AQL1A is difficult to work at 60Hz signal from the docking station and sometimes initiates at 59hz, which requires manually changing to 60hz.

Dell S2721DGF vs Gigabyte M27Q - 2721 is impressive, with less backlight bleed than the m27Q and superior contrast levels. Overall, the Dell is a nicer all around sold for $309 at best buy, while the m27Q is sold for $259. Also, the gigabyte has a 180Hz vs. 165hz on the Dell, which is minor, but the gigabyte costs $50 less. However, Dell wins in every other way, as it seems faster, the image has more pop/depth, stand/appearance is nicer though both are good and cheap and should be good for a couple of years.

Dell S2721DGF vs LG 27G850 - The s2721 comes with display hdr 400 certification, and it supports local dimming, but there are only 8 edge-lit local dimming zones meaning there's a lot of haloing around bright objects. Its brightness is only shy of 500 nits in HDR mode, which isn't ideal for a good experience, but it has decent color space support. However, it doesn't have a true HDR display. Sold at the same price, the LG 27G850 and Dell S2721DGF have a refresh rate that offers excellent results without pushing the panel hard. The 27G850 may be better for serious color work as it has a color gamut clamp. For brightness, Dell delivers above-average results beating LG by a small amount, but both handle reflections well. However, Dell has a better contrast ratio of 857:1. For color performance, Dell has a wide gamut panel of 95% P3 coverage, similar to LG, so there's no appreciable difference. Performance-wise, Dell has the best offer at the highest refresh rate, slightly faster than LG. For default performance, Dell is better calibrated than LG, with better adherence to the sRGB gamma curve, more accurate color temperature, lower Delta E average of 2.52, which is better than an average gaming monitor. However, it doesn't ship with a clamped color gamut. Also, Dell doesn't exhibit anything unusual from a power consumption perspective when set at 200 nits of brightness with LG; LG is slightly more efficient. Additionally, there's no backlight strobing mode, and Dell is a more responsive monitor than LG, with a total lag of about 20% better on the dell. Still, the difference is not that noticeable unless moved up to a 240Hz display.

Value - It's a steal for the price with a great warranty. Also, considering there's no backlight bleed, no dead pixels, and it's a 27-inch 1440p screen with 165Hz. Plus, the brightness and colors, with or without HDR enabled, are great, and the blue lights are also a nice touch.
