Targeted Consumer - The Elgato has been making products for streamers for a while now. Specifically, the Elgato Wave 3 is aimed at streamers who’s looking for an easy link with their streaming setup, podcasters who needs something that plugs via USB, and conference callers who wants a better audio than a gaming headset. Overall, it’s aimed at the same needs as something like the Blue Yeti can provide.

Design & Purpose - The Elgato Wave 3 is a USB cardioid microphone that features a user-friendly design that will suit any studio design. Also, it’s a competent gaming mic. It is a microphone that is better suited for users who do podcasts and streamings rather than music production.

Convenience - The Elgato Wave 3 is a convenient tool that contain most controls that you need. On the front panel, there’s an LED metering that can guide you. It also features low-latency monitoring that can blend with direct mic levels with your computer audio, a WaveLink app for users wanting to stream with multiple audio sources. For a musician, a microphone that has a purer, and processing-free signal would be recommended.

Summary

Performance - The Elgato Wave: 3 microphone is the first one the company has made for gaming, and it's a good one. The Wave: 3 isn't as flexible as the Blue Yeti or as stylish as the HyperX QuadCast, but it records high-quality sound and has easy-to-use controls.

Purpose - This will not be the microphone that you can use for recording music, panel discussions, and conversations. It’s much better suited for individual use in the cyberspace.

Software - Although it wasn't the best mic for the price (but still very good), this is a great choice if you need all the features the software has to offer. Don't bother if you just want great sound and don't care about the software suite.

Accessories & Software - shockmount would be recommended for the Elgato Wave 3. However, their accessories are overpriced with the pop filter at $52, and the shockmount at $60. It’s also said that the software crashes a lot though it’s being updated regularly, but if you really care about the software then an AT2035 and Elgato Wave XLR would be a better choice, they also sound better.

Sound Quality - Usage - The sound quality is very impressive with an electric guitar, and acoustic guitar though it will not be a great first option for singing. For a streamers, and those who want to record music in their homes, this is a good option.

Sound - The Elgato Wave 3 is not recommendable over most streaming mics on the market as it doesn’t sound as subtle as the Rode Podcaster, while the Blue Yeti offers a variety of input modes for max versatility. But the Elgato Wave 3 has its own charms, specifically when paired with a Stream Deck, it’s also a great option for those starting a streaming space.

Capacitative Mute Button - A capacitive mute button can be found at the top of the Elgato Wave 3, which is highly sensitive and works quickly but touching it results to a tapping noise that’s more noticeable when muting than un-muting. It’s not a big issue but is just something to be noted of.

Clipguard Feature - The built-in ClipGuard feature emphasizes the Elgato Wave 3’s usefulness for spoken word contents as it automatically condenses the recorded audio to avoid accidental spiking of the mic. On the first launch, users can’t turn it off, but after continuous updates in the WaveLink software, the feature was eventually added. Overall, it’s a set-it and forget it kind of mic with a very useful ClipGuard feature that won’t do any issue when kept on. Once dial levels are set in, it will be hard to get blown-out audio.

Mic/PC Mix Slider - There;s a 3rd control on the Elgato Wave 3, which is the mic/PC mix slider that controls the balance between the voice and audio output from the PC. The last setting is useful for streaming and also not terribly useful pointless for podcasts and other non-gaming communications.

Shape - The Elgato Wave 3’s biggest issue is its shape that will be requiring some proprietary accessories, mainly the shock mount. Also, it’s a condenser mic so it will pick up a lot of background noise, so it’s not the best choice if you have a cheap mechanical keyboard with low end outemu blues, or a loud room. A dynamic mic would be more recommended for gaming but the features of the Wave 3 is good enough.

Type - The Elgato Wave 3 is a condenser mic meaning it’s more sensitive than the dynamic ones and is great at picking up the intricacies of vocal recordings in a quiet environment. It has a cardioid polar pattern meaning it records in a heart shape around the mic, picking up sounds mainly in front and sides with less in the back. It’s capable of getting a high quality recording with 24-bit/96kHz, which can’t be matched by most of its competitors. The benefit to it is the high bit rate which allows plenty of leeway in production.

Pop Filter - A pop filter for the Elgato Wave 3 would be a good idea although it doesn’t particularly suffer without it because it has some damping and padding on the interior behind the grille, which acts like an internal pop filter cutting down plosive and popping sounds. This makes it a solid tool for newbies and anyone looking for a simple USB mic. The original pop filter may be too expensive as 3rd party options will also work, but the 3rd party option shock mount may not work because of the mic shape.

Audio Pattern - The Elgato Wave 3 employs a cardioid audio pattern meaning it is optimized only for one person speaking directly to it.

Audio Quality - Elgato has promised a professional broadcast audio quality, which based on actual use is true. Using it to record a variety of pickup volumes, and communicating with coworkers in a large crowded Google Meet room had a touch of background noise particularly at higher pickups but is mostly a low hum of buzz. The users voice is crystal clear, and there’s no emphasis to p, s, and t sounds.

Background Noise - Dynamic vs Condenser - As the Elgato Wave 3 is a condenser mic, it is expected to pick up more background noise, which is not ideal for people with loud rooms, and improper set-up. Dynamic mics would be able to handle those situations better.

Comfort - Streaming Mics vs Wireless Headset - When compared to the convenience with a decent wireless headset, obtaining a streaming quality mic would be not necessary especially if it will only be used for chatting unless you will be streaming then it will be a justifiable purchase. However, the advance mixing features won’t be necessary unless you’re streaming.

Compatibility - The Elgato Wave 3 is compatible to be used with both Windows and Mac devices.

Distance - The recommended distance from the mic is roughly 7 inches, allowing the Elgato Wave 3 to deliver a clear, rich signal with crisp highs, even with a louder voice it won’t set off the capsule too much and most plosives are delivered clearly. If you move closer you’ll be able to get a decent amount of low-end, but due to the lack of a pop filter it’s not advised. Although the built-in padding and protection behind the grille does an above-average job of tamping down plosives. A proper seven inches or so of distance and a gain level with a reasonable amount of headroom should result in a vocal that, even with Clipguard in use, doesn’t sound overly processed, nor suffer from plosives.

Electret Capsule - A 17mm electret capsule can be found behind the flat rectangular grille of the Elgato Wave 3, it delivers the cardioid pattern with a frequency range of 70Hz to 20kHz, also with a 24-bit depth and maximum sample rate of 96kHz.

Performance - Acoustic Guitar - Using the Elgato Wave 3 with an acoustic guitar produces a very punchy mid-section, a nice and articulate but not fatiguing top-end, and a little repetitive, loose sounding, undefined sound at lower frequencies. Overall, it still works good on acoustic.

Performance - Singing - Using the Elgato Wave 3 for singing, it produces a smooth and refined mid-section, a clear but not overly bright, brittle, harsh, or shrill top-end, a nice and controlled low-end, and a not overly boomy top. It does have a low-cut or high-pass filter.

Performance - Spoken Word - Using the Elgato Wave 3 for a spoken word, it’s the most balanced USB mic, it produces a sound that is not overly boosted and sharp with the top-end, not overly nasally mid-section, and lower frequencies are not muddy. It has a pretty aggressive high-pass filter below 100Hz, so you won’t get that really authorative voice.

Set-Up - Similar to most detached USB microphones, the Elgato Wave 3 is aimed to make audio setups simpler. Set up is easy, you’ll just have to plug it to your computer, and you’re ready to record. The cord it comes with uses a USB-A to connect to PC, and the mic itself is a USB-C, so connecting is easy. Also, being set on a boom arm makes it much different and better.

Sound Quality - The Elgato Wave 3 delivers a solid audio quality, with the on-board controls making it easier to get the best performance out of the mic. A physical button for disabling the ClipGuard feature would also be nice. It sounds good for a USB mic as compared to the Blues, which is actually overrated and overpriced for the sound quality it provide.

Sound - The sound profile of the Elgato Wave 3 is tailored for podcasters and live streamers. It’s also great for spoken word contents but may not be the best option for a professional studio environment. Though the mids and highs are accurate, there’s a de-emphasis in the sub-bass range. It’s not that bad for voice recordings as it counters the proximity effect where bass gets boosted from leaning close, which is common when recording a podcast or YouTube video in a less formal environment. No worries for deep voices as the roll-off occurs at lower frequency.

Stream Deck Compatibility - It’s stream deck compatibility is what sets it apart from its competitors, the Elgato Stream Deck is an indispensable tool for streamers. It’s something between a tablet and a controller. It doesn't have a screen, but it has 15 programmable, customizable buttons that correspond to a variety of PC commands. Bottom line is that Stream Deck lets you press one button on a physical control panel to perform functions that would usually take multiple button presses on a monitor screen. When synced with the Wave 3, you’ll be able to do anything that would normally require you to manipulate the mic's controls.

Value - The Elgato Wave 3 has a nice look but the price may not be reasonable for a plastic USB mic with a shock mount that costs an extra $40. At this price range, mics will either record well or poorly but the Wave 3 actually records well. It is pricey but it records well and the dial is great for adjusting the mic itself.
