Lasting over 15 and a half hours, it surpasses the average performance of other laptops used for intensive tasks like video editing. In tests, it outlasted the previous M1 MacBook Pro 13-inch by almost two hours, and the Intel-powered MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020) by over seven hours. In our Tom's Guide battery test, which involved continuous web browsing, it stayed powered for an impressive 18 hours and 20 minutes. While it falls short of Apple's promised 20 hours, the battery life is still highly commendable. This improved battery performance is particularly notable, as it allows for extended productivity and eliminates the need for frequent charging, even during all-nighters.
Chipset - The M2 chip delivers impressive performance, particularly in video editing tasks. It smoothly handles day-to-day usage, effortlessly running multiple applications simultaneously without any problems. The CPU and GPU improvements on the M2 chip are highly impressive, demonstrated by noticeable performance gains. Additionally, some reviews have reported an extra 2-3 hours of battery life compared to previous models.
Gaming - The MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022) offers gaming capabilities, although its performance may not match that of dedicated gaming laptops. However, it provides a promising glimpse into a future where Apple embraces Mac gaming further. The increased memory on the M2 chip contributes to improved gaming experiences. Apple has emphasized the gaming potential of the M1 and M2 chips, showcasing the capabilities of Metal API and MetalFX upscaling during its WWDC 2022 keynote. As a result, M2-powered MacBooks, in particular, have the potential to be formidable gaming machines.
Heat Management - The MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022) maintains a cool temperature during use. Its underside reached a maximum temperature of 85 degrees, which is significantly lower than what is considered uncomfortably hot for a laptop. Similarly, the touchpad never exceeded 79 degrees. I also recently received this laptop from my university, without the ability to choose. Despite some negative reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. Coming from a 2017 MBP Intel, the new M2 model, with the same body, delivers noticeable improvements. During Migration Assistant setup, I noticed that while my original MBP became warm after an hour, the new M2 remained cool to the touch. It operates much smoother, providing a better overall experience.
Multimedia - It features a significantly improved media engine, which is the same one found in higher-end chips. This enhancement allows you to handle more demanding Final Cut Pro edits with ease.

Comparison vs. M2 MacBook Air 2022, & Comparison vs. M1 MacBook Pro - Some opted for M2 Pro over M2 Air and M1 Pro for an in-between choice, due to needing touch bar, fans, and better speakers after using 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch. Notch screen causes issues with apps on MacBook, unlike on iPhone or iPad.

Drawbacks - Design - The unchanged price comes with a trade-off: the MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022) retains the same design as its predecessors. While this may not be an issue for those who appreciate the older MacBook aesthetic, the absence of a fresh design makes it seem somewhat neglected by Apple. The laptop's appearance isn't unappealing, but the thick bezels and the well-known Touch Bar give it a dated look compared to the modern MacBook Pro 14-inch, MacBook Pro 16-inch, and MacBook Air 2022.
Drawbacks - Display - The Retina Display remains satisfactory, but my eyes are accustomed to Apple's contemporary screens. The absence of ProMotion stands out, especially since Microsoft has incorporated high refresh rates in the Surface Laptop Studio. Gaming laptops like ASUS Zephyrus G14 and Acer Predator Triton 500 SE, serving as efficient productivity tools, boast rapid screens and numerous functional ports for professionals.

Issue - Build - It’s speculated that for Apple, managing three different aluminum bodies could be complex, and the company likely has a significant stock of 13" bodies to use up. Still, it's disappointing that Apple didn't introduce an M2 Pro model with a fan, additional ports, and MagSafe. The Air and Pro are equally priced assuming the specs match, and being compelled to choose an outdated body for a fan (critical for heavy workloads) is frustrating. The 14" base model costs the same as a better-equipped 13". If the Air's throttling issues persist, one might opt for the 13-inch, given the appealing new colors.

Issue - Camera - In a video-centric world where video conferencing is vital for both work and personal connections, a 720p camera falls short. This is even more pronounced considering that the 2021 MacBook Pros and the latest MacBook Air all feature 1080p cameras.

Issue - Display Support - The machine is impressive and performs exceptionally well. However, it doesn't support more than two external screens, which became a dealbreaker. Furthermore, recent updates have caused compatibility issues with hubs like DisplayLink. This is frustrating considering the high cost of the MacBook Pro M2. Pushing consumers to opt for a Pro or Max model for additional monitors feels unfair. Despite its performance and growing familiarity with macOS, users won't tolerate such a limiting factor on a premium product.
Issue - Price - The pricing situation could have been resolved earlier by reintroducing the "MacBook" as the budget option and shifting the Air to the mid-tier. The price and performance disparity between the new Air and the actual "Pro" laptops is significant. An ideal lineup could include an 11/13” MacBook, 13”/15” Air, and 14”/16” Pro. Removing the Touch Bar, reducing the cost by $100, and reusing the current design (which is over five years old) could have been feasible. Pricing it at $1099 would have removed uncertainties about the fan and battery capacity.
Issue - Storage - An oddity with the base MacBook Pro M2 is its slower SSD compared to the old M1 MacBook Pro, affecting overall performance. The 256GB entry-level Pro storage is disappointing, with notably inferior SSD speed, even worse than the M1 MacBook Pro.
Issue - Value - The product seems unnecessary. With the new Air, old Air, and new 14/16 Pro available, the purpose of the 13" Pro is unclear. When the 13" Pro is priced close to the Air, it's redundant; those needing sustained power would opt for the 14" Pro. Later price hikes for the base 14" and 16" Pro are expected. The 13" serves as a pricing anchor with inferior features, making the upcoming price hike appear more reasonable. Although complaints might arise about a $2199 base M2 14" Pro, it seems less severe when compared to this model.
Limitations - Returning it makes sense due to the M2 Pro 13-inch lacking sufficient benefits to justify the expense. Those requiring sustained performance would also need 16GB RAM, an added cost for the 13-inch Pro. With initial storage at just 256GB, another expense is needed. In such cases, the M1 Pro base model 14-inch is better – offering sustained performance, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD to start. Users who occasionally push the machine but seek good performance without high costs might opt for a discounted M2 or M1 Air. Users cannot recommend the 13-inch Pro M2, as it seems nonsensical as a product. While some cite its remarkable battery life, all Apple Silicon MacBooks excel in battery life, making it unwise to solely decide based on that feature given other more impactful aspects of the experience.
