Durability - Blade - The blade does hold its sharpness for a decent amount of time, only requiring to be sharpened once in 2 years. Also, the drop point has enough thickness so the tip won't snap when used to pry things open. Since it's a D2, which is semi-stainless, rust doesn't form on it easily.

Edge - Performance - The blade doesn't hold its edge as long as expected even though it's D2 steel though it depends on the heat treatment and way of sharpening. Also, the blade is prone to flat spots on the edge though it's less rust-prone and sharpens easily.

Maintenance - The disassembly and maintenance are easier because all the screws are standard Torx fittings, while the body uses an hourglass-shaped standoff wherein the screws thread in from both sides, giving it a flow-through design, which is easier to clean. Overall, proper maintenance and care will add to the lifespan of your knife.

Performance - The deep hollow ground blade on the Elementum slices and dices with laser-like precision. Performance-wise, it does everyday cutting tasks and larger cutting tasks well. However, the sharpening will take a while, but the edge retention will last long.

Sharpening - The variant with a 14C28N could have come sharper out of the box though it's easy to sharpen, so that's fine. Re-profiling the knife will give it a nice edge.

Specifications - The Elementum is 6.99" long when open and 4.03" long when closed, its drop point blade is 2.96" long and 0.12" thick, and it weighs 2.89 to 3 oz. The blade can either be a D2 or CPM-S35VN steel, and the handle is offered in different materials, including a G10, Micarta, Wood, Brass, and Copper. The locking mechanism is a liner lock, while the deployment mechanism is a flipper and comes with a deep carry reversible pocket clip. It is manufactured in China and is sold for about $50.

Usage - The Elementum works well for light tasks, such as opening envelopes and packages or slicing vegetables, but it will have a hard time for harder use, such as using it as a baton or prying things open.

Button Lock vs Liner Lock - The Cogent is better because it has a button lock though you can get an Elementum with a button lock.

Deployment - The action is fun though it takes a few minutes to get used to; the deployment operates well and opens and closes smoothly. The only flaw is the Wharncliffe, which is common for most EDC knives.

Deployment - Lockup - The Elementum uses a stamped steel bent liner to lock the blade in place, which works by the outer edge of the lock bar lining up with the outer edge of the blade tang. The ball-bearing washers, blade weight, and flipper tab make deploying the knife easy, and when open, Elementum's liner lock keeps the blade securely in place with minimal blade movement.

Flip - The Elementum flips well but not as well as expected, as the detent is light and ill-defined, which leads to occasional misfires or half-openings. Also, it doesn't drop shut because of the friction between the detent ball and the blade tang.

Alternatives - There are a lot of alternatives for the price point of the Elementum at $50.

FRN/D2 Steel Will Cutjack Mini - It’s about one Five Guys lunch cheaper than the Elementum, and while it lacks the ball bearing pivot, It feels equally well-built and it has better ergonomics, benefiting from a forward finger choil and a thumb ramp, as well as a more sculpted handle with a more textured grip.

Honey Badger - They’re available in three sizes (2.875”, 3.25” and 3.6”) and two steels (8Cr and D2) as well as three blade shapes (a standard drop point, an aggressive hawkbill and a funky “wharncleaver”) but the most directly comparable to the Elementum would be the small (2.875”) drop point model in D2 steel, which rings in at ~$52- so nearly identical price to the Elementum, as well as materials – G10 scales, D2 blade, ball bearing pivot, steel deep carry clip. The Honey Badger is a little lighter at 2.5 ounces, and it also offers the choice of a thumb hole in addition to the flipper tab for opening.

Kershaw Skyline - Slightly more expensive than the Elementum, the Skyline features a 14C28N blade and a classic flipper/liner lock design. The Elementum has a much smoother action compared to the Skyline and fits better overall in most hands. The Skyline’s pocket clip has been a common complaint from knife lovers around the world since its release but this has been discontinued.

Kershaw - It has anodized aluminum handles, SpeedSafe assisted opening via a torsion bar, a nice bent steel clip, and a 3.25” drop point blade with a flipper tab. They use 420HC (high-carbon) steel for the blade, which isn’t in the same universe as D2 or even 8Cr13MoV for edge retention.

Kizer - Kizer sort of splits this market, with most of their Vanguard line knives ringing in around $70, but the cheaper Tangram sub-brand coming in closer to ~$30. The Progression, Orion, and Vector are all only sold on Amazon and Aliexpress. It’s shocking the kind of quality you get for the money, and the Vector has to be the best deal going on a pocket knife now. The slick button lock action and aluminum handles as well as good quality Acuto440 steel seem like a bargain for the $31 the Vector commands on Amazon Prime.

Ontario Knife Company Rat Model II - The Rat II is similar in size and weight to the Elementum, but also has its own shortcomings when it comes to materials and quality control. The Rat II features an AUS8 blade, nylon handle scales, and bronze washers. The Rat II is a great budget blade, but the upgraded blade steel, ball-bearing washers, and authentic G10 handle scales make the Elementum a much better choice for a little more money. ~$36 will get you a Rat 2 in AUS-8 stainless steel, or $40 to upgrade to harder-wearing D2 steel.

SOG Terminus XR - At pretty much the same price as the Elementum, you can get the standard version of the SOG Terminus XR. They make a more expensive carbon fiber/S35VN version at around $85, and a standard version with G10 and D2, like the Elementum. Instead of a liner lock, it uses SOG’s XR lock, which functions similar to an Axis lock, but with ball bearings. It is heavier than the Elementum or Mini Cutjack.

Steel Will Cutjac - The Cutjack features the same D2 blade steel as the Elementum, but it lacks in the simple class that the Elementum provides. The Cutjack is a great knife for the money, but it’s pocket clip allows the knife to sit above the pocket line and its FRN handle scales are too aggressive for some.

Terminus XR - Around the same price as the Elementum, the Terminus XR features SOG’s patented XR Lock that is reminiscent of Benchmade’s AXIS lock. The main complaint with the Terminus XR is its pocket clip. It is shallow and does not fit the variety of pant styles that the Elementum does due to its width and shorter length.

Variants - There are 22 different variants for the Elementum. The base models come in G10 handles with various colors, and different materials are also offered, including a wooden and carbon scale, which adds to the price. One of the most affordable variants is the Elementum, with a standard satin finish D2 blade and blue G10 scales for $50.

CRKT Titanium Homefront vs Civivi Elementum - The CRKT Titanium Homefront doesn't have a flush-fit screw, and with the micarta, it doesn't go too thin, so its deep carry clip will snag your pants. In contrast, the Elementum has a good deep carry clip recessed to the scale.
