Overview - Gaming - The Sennheiser HD 650 headphones deliver a decent experience for games that use binaural audio, including Hunt: Showdown. However, immersion can be improved in games that don't have binaural audio by employing surround sound processing, such as DTS Headphone: X (balanced mode) or Dolby.

Overview - Value & Competition - These headphones are priced at around $220 USD, or roughly $310 AUD, and are considered to be in the mid-tier category. They provide a slight upgrade above budget options like the Beyerdynamic DT880, Sennheiser HD58X, and the more recent 560S. These headphones must justify their slightly higher price given the strong competition that is offered at a lower price point.

Overview - Soundstage - Although opinions vary, its soundstage is not particularly broad, but depending on the use, it's okay along with the tranquil sound. The higher pitch sounds can be grating, thus the limited frequency response is valuable. Although the clamp was originally visible, it can be worn all day without discomfort. Even though the bass may be lacking, the mids are excellent, especially for acoustic music. It may also be enjoyable to certain individuals with tube amplification.

Overview - Sound Quality & Target Market - It provides a balanced, neutral tone without any overly dramatic features. They offer a fluid bass-midrange-treble balance that brings out minor musical details without wearing the listener out. The treble is pleasing without being harsh, and the vocals are clear. The headphones produce a fairly neutral sound while maintaining channel balance and avoiding distortion. They are made to be accurate and respond like a studio, maintaining the music's original intended sound. Open-backed headphones, such as the HD 6XX, are more sensitive to ambient noise and may require more power to operate. Pop and jazz are genres where they shine, although classical music and some instrument classes might not be as suitable. It is also renowned for being inexpensive and transparent to the amplifier, which means that certain characteristics of the audio system can affect it. It works well with tube amplifiers and is an excellent choice for audio enthusiasts to start when trying to upgrade their gear. Overall, it is well-known for its mid-range performance and is a preferred option for acoustic music, guitars, and voices. However, it is crucial to remember that individual preferences might change and that different headphones may have distinct sound characteristics.

Overview - Usage & Compatibility - It is advised to use a DAC and amplifier to get the best performance possible because these headphones need more power than regular headphones. Computer setups are more appropriate because some devices, like phones, can't deliver enough volume for these headphones. Despite having 300 ohms, it doesn't consume a lot of power. They require less than 120 milliwatts of power to produce adequate listening volumes, so even a one-watt amplifier is more than sufficient. To perform at their best, they do need an amplifier that can deliver at least six volts. The majority of desktop devices easily meet the voltage requirement, even though some portable devices might not give the best output. More power does not always imply higher quality because the quality of the amplifier as a whole should be prioritized over its raw power output.

Recommendation - For those who find most headphones to be too bright, the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones are perfect. They are incredibly cozy and enhance the majority of recordings. These headphones will appeal to audiophiles on a budget or Sennheiser fans looking for a high-end sound at an affordable price. They provide an exceptional value and are especially well suited for desktop use. Although $200 may seem pricey for headphones, the Drop x Sennheiser HD 6XX is a remarkable deal in the world of high-end audio. They might not be appropriate for everyone, particularly travelers looking for transportable headphones. However, if superior audio quality is the priority at home, these headphones are a great purchase.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros
  • Cons
  • Positive
  • Negative
Pros - The Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones come highly recommended, especially when on sale. They offer exceptional detail across the frequency range and impressive depth and resolution in the midrange. There is clear separation between vocals and instruments, and they synergize well with various genres like pop, jazz, rap, soul, and opera. The treble response is clean and accurate. While not completely neutral, they can be used as a reference set and respond well to EQ adjustments. They offer improvements over the Sennheiser HD 650 at a lower cost. The headphones are lightweight, comfortable, and visually appealing. The tuning is solid, particularly from around 100 Hz onwards, making them ideal for monitoring with excellent resolution for vocals and instruments. They provide decent imaging and have a compact soundstage. The slightly warm mids add energy and detail. They are suitable for everyday listening, including calls and movies, but may not be the best choice for gaming.

Cons - When using the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX as monitors, it's important to account for their deviation from fully neutral tuning. The lacking bass response may affect their mainstream appeal. The soundstage is not as expansive as expected for an open-back set. They require more power to drive compared to most headphones in this range. There is a longer decay in the upper treble, although the darker response helps mitigate it. The near-proprietary connectors on the ear cups should also be noted. The HD 6XX prioritizes technical performance, dynamics, and slam/punch may not be its strong points. The soundstage lacks width and depth, and the highs have a subtle shift. While imaging is decent for music, they may not be the best choice for gaming.

Build - Clamp - Over time, the clamp of the headphones will loosen. When not in use, it is advised to stretch the headphones on a box to maintain the perfect fit. The headphones become one of the most comfortable options after this modification.

Build - Comfort - The HD 6XX is a cozy over-the-ear, open-back headphone. A comfortable wearing experience is guaranteed by the soft velour ear pads and moderate clamping pressure. Adjust the steel band extensions and make use of the ear cups' tilt/swivel capabilities to get a good fit and seal. The foam supports on the headband might not feel particularly comfortable at first, and the strong clamping force might be felt. But as time and use pass, the clamp force naturally diminishes, leading to greater comfort. Despite being initially uncomfortable, the headphones quickly loosen up and become lightweight for prolonged wear.

It's important to keep in mind that different pads can change the sound signature of headphones, and replacements in different materials are offered by independent businesses. To keep the original sound signature when the first set wears out, it is advised to buy OEM pads from Sennheiser. Even after years of use, the velour pads have proven to be sturdy.

It's an incredible pleasure to listen to the headphones, especially for those who have never heard mid-range like it before. Despite the narrow soundstage, the vocal presence and texture in the mid-range are exceptional. Performance

  • Frequency Response

  • Treble Response
  • Positive
  • Negative
Frequency Response - The HD 6XX is marketed as a reference-class headphone by Drop and Sennheiser, meaning it aims to maintain a neutral and accurate sound signature without emphasizing bass, mids, or treble. The frequency response curve does deviate slightly, especially in the lower frequencies, despite the fact that it displays a smooth transition and overall accuracy. As a result, despite not being completely impartial, it stays true to its reference-class intention.

VSG - TechPowerUp

10/26/2021
Frequency Response
Source
Noise Isolation - It's an open-back headphone with a roomy and immersive soundstage. It provides a more open and less enclosed sound than other open headphones, allowing ambient noise to be heard. It is better suited for solitary listening at home due to its lack of external noise isolation and the ability for nearby listeners to hear the sound.

Steve Guttenberg - CNET

05/25/2019
Noise Isolation
Source
Treble Response - The treble response is subject to "Sennheiser veil" criticism. Although the tuning seems to be smooth, it doesn't seem to be a drawback. Because of the low total harmonic distortion, adding a peak and/or shelf filter to improve presence is a simple process using EQ software.

However, compared to higher-end options like the HiFiMAN Sundara, there is a noticeable gap in technical performance and resolution. Due to the HD 6XX's somewhat lacking treble and transients, some people prefer the Sundara. In comparison to more recent options, the HD 6XX's design is dated.

Comparison vs. HD650, & Comparison vs. HD600 - Other headphones are much more preferred for a detailed listening experience, but the HD6XX, HD650, and HD600 are still worthwhile investments in 2020 for general listening. When combined with tubes, they produce a cozy and laid-back sound.

Comparison vs. HD600 - Although some people may not like the initial clamping pressure, the HD 600 series is comfortable. The memory foam in the ear cups is not the softest one on the market. However, they break in nicely and become very cozy to wear over time. The HD 600 series' open-backed design offers a natural audio experience for music, movies, or games, but it also makes it possible to hear background noise. It's crucial to remember that anyone nearby can easily hear loud audio.

Comparison vs. HD650, & Comparison vs. HD58X - The HD650s and the 6XX have similar unique characteristics. When using the bottle head mainline amplifier's high output mode, the HD58X performs better than expected. However, regardless of output impedance, the 6XX sounds excellent with any amplifier.

Comparison vs. DT880 - Despite having different sound properties, the 6XX easily outperforms the DT880. With its heavier sound and more accurate representation, the 6XX offers a superior headphone listening experience, while the DT880's V-shaped signature can make it sound hollow. The DT880 excels in terms of soundstage size, whereas the 6XX's soundstage is constrained by its lower treble energy. The DT880's increased treble, however, can occasionally produce a slightly hollow sound that places the mids behind the bass and treble. Overall, both headphones are excellent choices, but the 6XX is suggested as a general-purpose headphone.

Comparison vs. Hifiman 4XX - The headphones lacked the 6XX's presence and clarity in the midrange and the DT880's impact and bass. It was in the middle and lacked both of their positive traits.

Comparison vs. DT990 Pro, Comparison vs. Sundara, Comparison vs. T50RP. & Comparison vs. Sony MDR-XB950N1 - After nearly a decade of trying various mid-range and bass-heavy consumer headphones, it was surprising to hear people refer to the HD650/6XX as "bass light." It is not something that should be described as lacking bass. Even though some people may find it to be lean, it's still fun.

Comparison vs. K712 Pro, Comparison vs. HD560S, & Comparison vs. X2HR - Specific use cases are where the HD 6XX shines. Alternatives like the K712 Pro, HD 560S, or X2HR are preferable for gaming, binaural recordings, or for those who prefer Beyer treble or deep bass extension. However, the HD 6XX is excellent for those who want warmth, a hint of darkness, smooth natural mids, sharp vocals, and a hassle-free experience without the need for EQ. It won't draw attention to flaws so music can be enjoyed to its fullest.

Comparison vs. DT990 - It is safe to recommend the HD6XX because they are enjoyable to listen to and won't irritate the ears with subpar mastering. They offer comfortable, all-day listening without causing fatigue. However, they are not appropriate for enjoyable or critical listening; for those purposes, earbuds with a V-shaped tuning are preferable.

Comparison vs. 598SE - Since there are diminishing returns, the HD 6XX is better than the 598SE but not twice as good. The latters head clamp had to be adjusted, but the 598SE is incredibly comfortable. Non-overly bass-heavy music and video games sound great on the HD 6XX.

Price - Accessories - At just $200, this headphone is very reasonably priced. Although the (Mass)Drop x Sennheiser HD 6XX has an MSRP of $220 on the Drop website, it frequently goes on sale for less than $200, so it is worthwhile to wait for a deal. Additionally, a number of optional accessories are available, including extra cables, DACs, and pads.

Competition - Due to fierce competition, the HD 6XX headphones may not be as well-rounded all-around audiophile headphones as they were ten years ago, but they still have a devoted following. Their strengths include providing close-knit vocals that are authentic and sincere, as well as excellent timbre and tonality and non-Beyer treble characteristics.

History - The HD 650 headphones are well-known audiophile models that have been sought after by other manufacturers for more than 20 years, along with their close relatives like the HD 6XX. Even more than the HD 800 series, they are the embodiment of the signature Sennheiser sound. They prioritize overall clarity over a lot of bass because they are made for less listening fatigue and a more natural sound. They have great sound right out of the box and can also be EQ-fine-tuned. They perform remarkably well even when powered by an iPhone despite having a 300-ohm impedance, making them a worthwhile option even for those who don't have a separate budget for an amplifier.

Issue - Imaging - Instruments - The HD6XX receives high praise from many Redditors for its clear and distinct instrument sound, but its imaging quality is viewed as average. Despite at first appearing "open," subsequent listening sessions revealed imaging quality limitations.

Issue - Soundstage & Sound Quality - Because of its small soundstage and biased imaging, the HD6XX is frequently thought to be overrated and overhyped. Its veil and muddiness are criticized, especially in the treble range, which leads to unsatisfactory high-pitched instruments. When compared to earphones that are less expensive, the bass is lacking and the clamping force is uncomfortable for prolonged use. The listening experience can be significantly influenced by one's listening habits, anatomy, and musical preferences. Despite its low cost, the HD6XX is generally regarded as a subpar headphone, and some people would not recommend it based on their personal experiences.

Issue - Treble - The well-known Sennheiser "veil," caused by the lower-treble recession, makes percussive hits and finger snaps sound dull and lack initial sharpness.

Market Effects - Since the release of the HD 6XX, the headphone market has significantly changed, now offering planar magnetic and beryllium-coated dynamic headphones in the same price range. These alternatives might sound underwhelming when compared to headphones with tunings like the V-MODA Crossfade M-100. The HD 6XX excels at retrieving fine details, enabling precise differentiation of different notes and hums in the sub-bass and mid-bass ranges. To prevent seeing low resolution, however, it should be paired with a powerful source. It might be worthwhile to look into other headphone options if one's preferred musical genres are hard rock, house music, or electronic dance music.

Recommendation - Amp & DAC - O2 amp, JDSLabs Atom, Schiit Heresy, Topping L30, Geshelli Archel 2, and Monoprice Liquid Spark are a few choices for desktop headphone amplifiers. The Topping E30, Topping D10s, JDSLabs Atom DAC, FX Audio DAC-SQ3, Schiit Modi 3+, and SMSL SU-6 are some of the suggested desktop DACs. Consider the Loxjie D30, Topping DX3pro+, Creative G6, Topping EX5, FiiO K5pro, and Schiit Hel if you prefer a DAC/amp combo. Pick based on one's preferences for the product's features, cost, appearance, connectivity options, and customer service.
