Overview - Build - With the Mavic Air 2, DJI gets just about everything right. The drone is as small as it needs to be, stowing in a small bag with ease so you can roll some footage at the end of your favorite hiking trail. Imaging and video features are also top-notch, as good as you can get in a drone that costs less than $1,000. It sidesteps the connectivity and wind-resistance issues we experienced with the entry-level Mavic Mini, and has a much more capable camera all around.

Overview - Features - The Air 2 offers better collision-avoidance systems, higher-quality photos and video, and a wide assortment of automated flight features. With new motors, new electronic speed controllers, improved battery technology and enhanced aerodynamics, the Mavic Air 2 is fast, easy to fly and very responsive. This is a big boost over the original Mavic Air's 21-minute flight time and is even three minutes longer than the Mavic 2 models. In terms of safety features, the Mavic Air 2 provides obstacle sensors of the front and rear of the drone that, when switched on, can help to avoid collisions. The camera also gets a big upgrade.
Overview - Target Market - The Mavic Air 2 is also a great drone for photographers who want to dabble in aerial photography.

Overview - Upgrade - Just when you thought the Mavic Mini was the most impressive small drone available, DJI has upped the ante with the Mavic Air 2, which sits comfortably between that model and the two prosumer Mavic 2 models. The overall design has been dramatically changed and with improved connection to the controller, noticeably longer battery life, 4K video at 60 fps, 48MP stills from the new 1/2-inch Quad Bayer sensor and a whole host of new functionality, this is a significant upgrade on the previous Mavic Air.

Recommendation - Reputation & Features - At the moment, the Mavic Air 2 feels very much like DJI's flagship drone, as something that flies well, offers 90 percent of what more expensive models offer, and costs less than $1,000. Mavic Air 2 is worth it for a first drone, not too expensive, long flight time and doesn’t struggle as much with wind as Mavic Mini.

Build - Controller - The Mavic Air 2 controller is larger and doesn't feature a folding design. This new controller shape is very comfortable to hold thanks to the contoured grips on the rear and its 393g weight. The phone is placed on the top of the controller via a telescopic grip. Any phone or tablet can be well-accommodated by the controller. Controller provides direct access controls which means that majority of camera controls are found in the DJI Fly App. It's a big upgrade over the older remotes. New enhancements and features added; we now have support for the dji smart controller. Perhaps the biggest physical change in this update is actually the design of the controller.

Build - Portability - Very portable and powerful. The folding design remains compact, and at 1.3 pounds, the drone is plenty portable.
Build - SIze - Small and compact, but bigger than Mavic Air. Quite a bit heavier as well but only almost half the size and weight of the Maverick 2 Pro.
Build - Weight - Heavy enough to be required to be registered for use in US. Fee is a nominal $5.

Design - The Mavic Air 2's completely new design looks like someone blasted the Mavic 2 series with a shrink ray, and it comes with a new controller too. Everything is redesigned in Mavic Air 2 with usability in mind. It feels very different from its predecessor. The Mavic Air 2 sits low to the ground on its rear arms. This design is a huge improvement over the previous model. All it is amazingly stable to fly.
Design - Remote - Remote control is completely redesigned; Has bigger and better remote control. It charges via USB-C and connects to your phone via a short cable. Controls are easy to learn and navigate; left stick sets altitude and rotates the aircraft, while right stick propels it in a chosen direction. There is also a programmable Fn button. There is a toggle switch where user can switch to different flight modes. Basic camera controls are in the remote too. Remote Control does not have a screen display so you’ll have to go straight to the app to see the view from the drone’s point of view.

AirSense - AirSense hardware is in short supply. This technology has been employed to help reduce the risk of air incursions, though it will sadly only be available in Mavic Air 2 units in North America initially.
Automated Shot Modes - The expected automated shot modes are here, including a straight pull back and a Boomerang function and an Orbit mode, but with no obstacle sensors on the sides you’ll need to take some care using it. There are also some automatic shooting modes, called SmartPhoto, available at 12MP that you don't get at 48MP.
Automatic Landing - Can do automatic landing.

Camera - DJI has changed things up, swapping out the Air's 12MP camera for a new one that can shoot photos with 48MP resolution in DNG or JPG format. While the 48MP figure is head-turning, you're still limited by a relatively small image sensor. The dual-resolution capability comes from a Quad Bayer sensor design, which leads to a bit more grain, but a palpable improvement in detail, when shooting at 48MP. It's a great tool for those who want to get into aerial photography. The camera lens provides a full-frame equivalent focal length of 24mm with a fixed f/2.8 aperture. Images are sharpest in the center of the frame with a drop off the closer you get to image edges.
DJI Fly App - The Mavic Air 2 uses the DJI Fly app, introduced with last year's Mavic Mini. If you're upgrading from the original Air, you'll find its interface similar enough to the older DJI Go app. It's available for Android and iOS platforms. DJI Fly App also shows also how to upgrade the drone's firmware, view flight logs, and transfer media from the drone to your device. DJI Fly App provides other settings like swapping out imperial units for metric, adding a framing grid to the camera display, and setting up a virtual geofence to keep the drone within a set distance. It also allows automated shot modes and tracking functions. The app shows the view from the camera lens, swappable with a Google Maps view of the area in which you're flying with a tap on the screen.
Drone Range - Staying in the air longer may be the Air 2's best trick, but it's certainly not the only one. The range has expanded to over 6 miles. The range and transmission strength on the Mavic Air 2 is quite good.
Drone Remote Connection - OcuSync 2.0 is the reason of the stable connection between the remote and the drone at up to 10 km. It supports 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequencies and can switch between the two when necessary. Anti-interference technology also helps block unwanted signals. Despite all this new and improved technology, the video feed of the Mavic Air 2 still stutters and locks momentarily while the drone continues to move.
Find My Drone - The Mavic Air 2 has a Find My Drone function.

Flight Modes - Has different automated flight modes. These include FocusTrack, Hyperlapse (up to 8K) and four flight options; Free movement, Circle, CourseLock and WayPoints. Then there are the 'QuickShot' automated flight modes. They have all the intelligent flight modes bundled together.
Flight Time - DJI claims 34 minutes in ideal conditions, which is impressive, especially considering the original Mavic Air struggled to get much over 20.
Geofencing - This drone will prevent you from entering airspace where it is prohibited.
Internal Storage - It has 8 GB internal storage.

Setup - Make sure the remote controllers set to normal mode. Ensure the propellers are properly attached, the battery is secure and the gimbal protector has been removed. Download the DJI Fly app. Open up the DJI Fly app, make sure the aircraft and remote controller are linked, and then tap Go Fly. Tap Safety and set the RTH height higher than the tallest building or object near you.
Software - It uses the same DJI Go app as the Mavic Mini.

Price - Fly More Kit - Fly More Kit adds a bag, two additional batteries, neutral density filters, and a multi-battery charger. It costs $999 / £949 / AU$1899 and is the best choice for more seasoned fliers. The Mavic Air 2’s longer flight time means there's less of a need to pack extra batteries, which makes the Fly More Kit feel less necessary. That said, the battery-to-power-bank adapter is very useful for recharging in the field.

Registration - It depends on where you live if you need to register your drone or not. There are different registration scheme depending on which country you reside. In some regions, including the US and UK, new legislation has been passed for drones that weigh 250g and over. For USA, if you're a recreational drone pilot – that is, someone who is flying for fun rather than commercial gain – you'll simply need to register your Mavic Air 2 with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), then mark your drone with the registration number. For UK, following the new introduction of a drone registration scheme from 30 November 2019, the UK's CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) now requires anyone who's responsible for a drone weighing between 250g and 20kg to register as an operator. For Australia, Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is planning a new drone registration scheme on similar lines to the CAA one above, but so far it hasn't been officially introduced.
