Overview - Features - Combining the DJI Mavic Air 2's compact design and the Mavic 2 Pro's image quality, the Air 2S is now the best all-round drone you can buy with new features such as a large 20MP 1-inch sensor and digital zoom, with a weight of 595g. Though it's slightly pricier than its predecessor but is worth the extra cost. It’s the perfect combination of size, weight and features, making it ideal for people who take drones with them on days out. Also, the safety features make it safe and intuitive, but the weight of the drone requires CAA (UK) or FAA (US) registration. However, there are rumors that DJI is going to announce a new drone: the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, which could boast new features, including a duo camera set-up, with one of them featuring a telephoto lens and the other offering a 20MP Four Thirds sensor. It has a bigger sensor, and 20 megapixels, enough detail to get everything, while the light is enough to get good low light shots, and great picture overall with a dynamic range to shoot different things like the ultra-wide panorama. Its clip is big enough to support larger handsets, and the remote can charge the phone. It has a one-inch sensor on a consumer level drone with 5.4k video, 10 bit color, and smart flight modes perfect flight.

Design - Build - The design of the Air 2S is similar to the DJI Mavic 2 Pro although it’s smaller and lighter. Also, the propeller arms are folded in for transportation and folded out for flight, with the front arms swinging out while the rear arms rotate down and out. Also, all moving parts feel robust and reliable. However, the controller has a fixed size.

Design - Portability - Outside, the Air 2S look similar to the Mavic Air 2, with a few subtle differences. It features a folding design that Mavic drones are known for, the front arms swing out, while the rear arms rotate down and out for flight and help keep the drone highly transportable. Dimension-wise, its at 3.3 by 3.8 by 7.1 inches (180×97×80mm) when folded, and about 1.3 pounds, but unfolded its at 7.2 x 3 x 10in. (183×253×77mm).

Weight - FAA Registration - It weighs 595 grams or 1.3 pounds. However, it’s heavy enough to require FAA registration, but if you're flying for fun, a $5 fee covers any drones you own for three years. On the other hand, pilots making money whether for real estate, cinema production, or anything in between are required to pass a certification exam.

Aperture - It features a fixed f/2.8 aperture, thus there’s no ability to control exposure while the drone is in the air beyond changing shutter speed and ISO, so a set of ND filters are essential for video shooters.

Camera Features - The Air 2 features a 20MP 1-inch sensor and a full-frame equivalent focal length of 22mm with a fixed aperture at f/2.8 and a focus range of 60cm to infinity. ISO control of 100-12,800 is available for stills, while 100-1600 is available for video, and is capable of making photos with more pixels though most will use its 12MP binned output but there's more to a picture than pixels. Also, it provides in-camera processing that’s applied even to Raw files but does produce great results where noise only becomes noticeable at ISO 6400.

Camera Moves - Toggle - A center toggle switches between slow (Cine), standard (Normal), and fast (Sport) flight modes. Specifically, Cine and Normal are for more elegant camera moves as turning the drone in the air when using either, makes the camera stay smooth and level. In Sport mode, the drone flies faster for video with more sense of motion, and turning the drone gives a banking, POV effect from video, which is fitted for action shots, but obstacle detection isn't supported in Sport.

Camera - It's essentially a professional level drone that shoots 4K or 5.4K footage in 10-bit color depth. Files can be smaller, but generally the video files will be large. It has an obstacle avoidance sensors at the top bottom front and back, and is significantly larger with better wind resistance. Additionally, it has a 22-millimeter wide angle lens.

Image Quality - For stills photography, you can shoot in Raw, JPEG or both, and for video you can shoot in standard color profiles for straight out of camera footage, D-Log (10 bit) for professional quality Raw footage or HDR in HLG (10 bit). In terms of video frame rates, it’s possible to shoot 5.4K at 24/25/30 fps, 4K at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps, 2.7K at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps and FHD at 24/25/30/48/50/60/120 fps. Also, it features a 20MP 1-inch sensor, with the camera providing an 88-degree field of view or a full-frame equivalent focal length of 22mm. It features a digital zoom that allows you to get closer to the action without the drone being physically closer. However, the maximum setting you’d want to use is 2x because image quality naturally reduces the more it’s applied up to 4x in 4K and 8x in FHD. Images shot at ISO 3200 are also clean for a drone, even one with a 1-inch sensor. It’s only at ISO 6400 where noise becomes more noticeable.

Video Quality - It nets still images with better detail and more dynamic range, and its video has greater bit depth and twice as many pixels as a 4K drone can capture. It also does 4k at 60 fps in recording, with a higher maximum resolution of 5.4K, and a 5.4K clip contains about 16.8MP, just about twice that of an 8MB 4K frame. It also supports 8-bit H.264 capture and higher-quality 10-bit HEVC. Also, its unlikely to notice the difference when using the standard color profile, but the extra data contained in a 10-bit file comes in handy for cinematographers who take the time to work in the flat D-Log format and apply color correction to footage. The HDR HLG format is also 10-bit.

Controller - The controller isn't foldable and larger with a weight of 393g. Performance-wise, it connects fast, but doesn’t offer a simple screen showing basic flight and camera information. Battery-wise, it’s larger with longer life. But rather than attaching phones to arms at the bottom of the controller like the Pro, this controller uses a telescopic grip at the top to support phones. The control sticks unscrew for transportation and can be stowed away in the rubber sections at the bottom of the controller. Build-wise, it's a rectangular, gray slab with removable control sticks, a number of camera and flight control buttons, and convenient USB-C charging. Comfort-wise, it fits comfortably in the hand, not unlike a video game controller.

Specifically, the left stick controls yaw and altitude, while the the right moves the drone forward, backward, left, or right in space. There’s also an emergency control button that can set the aircraft to hover in place with a short press, or automatically fly back to your position with a longer one, and a control wheel to set the camera tilt at the left bumper position and a video/photo button at the right.

Zoom - Frame Rate - Its zoom starts at 4x with 4K at 30fps video and goes up to 8x zoom with 1080p at 30fps. Considering the laws that govern how close to people drones can safely fly (no closer than 50m, in most cases), it allows you to get close while maintaining that safe distance. For professional drone pilots, this could be an extremely useful feature, and for enthusiasts it will open the door to more creative stills and videos. Quality-wise, the zoom is achieved less destructively, because the Air 2S’s camera can record at up to 5.4K. Performance-wise, at 60fps it can zoom in digitally up to six times 1080p at 30fps can zoom in digitally up to eight times 4k at 60fps can zoom in digitally up to three times while 4k 30fps can go up to four times, and 5.4k can’t zoom.

Battery Life - Charging - Its battery is good for around a half hour, as it’s rated at 31 minutes, and you can expect to get within a couple minutes of that in real-world conditions. How you fly, wind, and other factors come into play. Charging takes about 70 to 80 minutes to reach a full charge.

Ease of Use - Flying is easy and safe because of the flight features such as the flight modes, automated video modes, collision avoidance and manual flight control that provide as little or as much assistance as you need.

Ease of Use
Source
Flight Time - Power Use - The maximum flight time is 31 minutes. That claim is for when there’s no wind, so when factoring in the weather and the Return-To-Home function (which kicks in when the battery reaches 25%), the flight times are often around 20 minutes per battery, depending on conditions. The most power is used when flying in Sport Mode, where the drone can reach speeds of up to 42.5mph/68kmh. Other flight modes include Positioning Mode (P) where all sensors are active and Cine (C) where speed is restricted and controls are less sensitive for shooting cinematic-looking video footage.

Video Format - Color Profile - It can record video in H.264 or H.265 formats, and choose from three video color profiles, which are Normal (8-bit), D-Log (10-bit) or HLG (10-bit). Pro users can fit their aerial footage into a raw video workflow with color grading, while hobbyists can use Standard more to get footage that looks great straight out-of-camera without any need for raw editing.

Video Quality - Resolution - Frame Rate - Zoom - Dropping down to 4K ups the maximum frame rate to 60fps, the same maximum at 2.7K and 1080p for standard recording. There's a separate slow-motion option for recording at 1080p120 only. For the most part the drone operates exactly the same at these lower resolutions, but you will gain subject tracking and automatic navigation around obstacles at 30fps and lower in all modes except for 5.4K. In terms of video, it’s possible to shoot 5.4K at up to 30fps, 4K at up to 60fps and Full HD at up to 120fps, so slow-motion video is available. There's also the 8x digital zoom, which starts at 4x with 4K at 30fps video and goes up to 8x with 1080p at 30fps. Zoom recording isn’t available while shooting 10-bit videos or 120fps videos.

DJI Fly App - The DJI Fly app is a free app for Android and iOS devices, is a necessary download. It's easy enough to set up but you'll need to create a DJI account to activate the drone and give it the required permissions to access your phone's camera roll. In the app you can configure many esoteric settings. The geofence is configurable there allowing swapping between metric and imperial units or adding a framing overlay grid as a photographic composition aid. Also, the app shows the view from the drone's camera, and gives access to the automated flight modes. It displays a map that shows your position in the world, as well as the drone's. The drone is represented by a blue arrow, and a floating red line is there to connect its position to where you're standing. It can also be used to switch between different photo and video modes. For images the drone can shoot in JPG or Raw format, either in a basic mode or a Smart Photo scene recognition mode. The app also sets video resolution between 1080p, 2.7K, 4K, and 5.4K, adjusts frame rates, and changes the color profile. Additionally, some basic video editing tools are included, but it's limited to 1080p output, and a Flight Log function, so you can go back and review your flights to check speed, altitude, and the like.

Comparison vs. Air 2, Mini 2 - Features - Sensor - Image Quality - While the Air 2 does have some nice features over the mini 2, the sensor size is almost the same so there’s no huge improvement in terms of image quality.

Comparison vs. DJI Air 2 - Build - Wind Resistance - Aperture Control - Value - Air2S is superior, and bridges the gap between the M2P and the Air 2 series well. All its lacking is slightly weaker wind resistance and lack of aperture control, but the price point is undeniable considering next current gen level is the M3.

Comparison vs. DJI Mini 2 - Price - Value - Beginner-Friendly - The Air 2S is likely above what a beginner needs so you’d be spending more money than needed ($1300). Something smaller caliber like the DJI Mini, and the Flymore Combo is only $600 and is great quality for fun video making.

Comparison vs. Mavic 3 - Usage - Weight - Portability - Features - The Air 2S is more suitable for outdoors than the DJI Mavic 3. Unlike the Mavic 3, the Air 2S has a much lighter weight and is much more portable, and there may be a bit too many features on the Mavic 3. The only drawback of the new, unreleased drone is the price and size. Specs-wise, it will have two cameras, one of which will be ideal for low light, and it will have master shots. The DJI Air 2S has a 1-inch sensor that’s a significant upgrade over the Mavic Air 2's 1/2-inch sensor and can record 5.4K video. Overall, the Air 2S is the best all-around drone price/performance wise, but the Mavic 3 is in no way shape or form worth $1000 more than the air 2S.

Comparison vs. Mavic Air 2 - Price - Sensors - Improvements - The Air 2S debuted less than a year after the Mavic Air 2 and is meant to coexist with its predecessor in the market. For $200 more than the Mavic Air 2, you only get a few improvements with the drone itself, and the big change is an extra set of obstacle sensors, positioned forward and facing slightly up.

Comparison vs. Mini 2 - Size - Camera - Sensor - The Mini 2 is slightly bigger than an iPhone and is easier to maneuver/transport. It shoots 4K files in 8-bit, which are great for social media and gives smaller file sizes, but it only has a downward sensor. On the other hand, the 2S has a 1" sensor, good photo quality, sensors, and sturdiness (wind resistance). Overall, the Mini 2 can get the job done for the most part, but the 2S is a great longer-term investment.

As for the shoulder bag, it’s something to carry the drone and accessories in, too.

Value - The Air 2S has great features and camera. For those who have a critical eye, or are a video editing maven, the extra $200 spent on the Air 2S is worth it.

App Limitations - Some features don't work at 5.4K, or at 4K when pushing the frame rate beyond 30fps such as the Active Track and APAS 4.0. The drone will still use its sensors to prevent collisions at higher resolutions and frame rates. Instead of flying around roadblocks, as it does with APAS, it simply stops and hovers in place at 4K60 and 5.4K.

Brand Information - This is the second drone release from DJI in a row to drop Mavic from the product name, so it's safe to say the company is moving away from clever branding. The DJI Air 2S, a bit bigger than the DJI Mini 2, and with a different camera than the otherwise similar DJI Mavic Air 2.
