Overview - Price - Sound Signature - Mid Bass - Value for Money - The R1280T is a powered bookshelf speaker set containing a tweeter and a miniature woofer per side. It boasts a very affordable price of 70€ for a flawless refurb, shipped. The speakers have an impressive sound signature that are, while definitely very heavy on the mid bass, are overall still a great package for their price. This especially counts for those coming from headphones/IEMs/TV or laptop speakers.

Overview - Volume - Sound Quality - The R1280T can be loud and have worse sound quality than the Creative 5.1 Speakers, having rather muddy sound especially when it comes to voices or instruments like a violin. The bass can also become too dominant when cellos are played, and the audio as a result can sound choked.

Mids - Vocals - Treble - The R1280T’s mids are slightly recessed and below average for detail retrieval. When it comes to thick and layered vocal effects a lot of nuances in the vocal fx chain are lost. Meanwhile, the Treble is elevated and sometimes sibilant, making long listening periods on the R1280T fatiguing. Turning down the treble makes the speaker sound veiled and muddy.

Soundstage - Imaging - The R1280T’s soundstage and imaging are very good for its price, with various vocals and instruments occupying audibly different positions, producing well mixed music that gives off an almost 3D sensation with the instruments’ sounds hitting from multiple clearly defined positions out of three fairly large globs of sound.

Tonality - The R1280T’s tonality is in general warm on the frequency low-end, and its treble is a bit crisp. The combined effects can fill a normal-sized living room even with sound-absorbing materials present.

Treble - The R1280T’s Treble and Timbre in vocal ranges is good, though it falls out a little in the middle of the voice range. The speakers’ 0.51-inch silk dome tweeter provides sharp and clear high tones that are crisp and undistorted and not too bright, which is something that most small speakers fail on.

Comparison vs. 4xx - Sound Quality - Price - The R1280T has a lot of mid bass, which unlike in most headphones or IEMs, indicate that the speaker is more capable of cleanly representing bass and mids as distinct entities, which adds to the good sound signature, making the R1280T a good purchase at its price point.

Comparison vs. Drop 4xx, Hifman 400i - Overview - Price - The R1280T is a competent although V-tuned gateway to speaker audio and compares favorably to most headphones in the 100-150 price bracket, serving as an affordable showcase for some qualities that speakers bring to the table. It is recommended as a first device for casual listening and multimedia usage, better than the Drop 4XX considering its price.

Comparison vs. Edifier R1850DB, M50X, DT1770, Audioengine A5 - Sound Quality - The R1280T is worse in terms of overall sound quality compared to the R1850DB, which itself is also worse in overall sound quality compared to the M50X, DT770, 1More Triple Driver Over Ear, and Audioengine A5 due to flabby bass with no detail, recessed, slightly robotic mids, and at parts glaringly bright treble that is nonexistent in other cases.

Comparison vs. Klipsch - Sound Quality - Price - The R1280T is underwhelming in terms of mids and highs compared to the Klipsch. The Klipsch’s sub, while not perfectly tuned, still offers better sound than the R1280T. In terms of price differences, the Klipsch is still the better purchase.

Comparison vs. Edifier R1700, Edifier R1850DB - Performance - Highs - Mids - Lows - Soundstage - The R1700BT offers okay performance which can get better with AUX, while the R1850DB is better with its digital input and sub out and it performs above its price point. Both can rival the Polk S60 in terms of wide and deep soundstage.

Comparison vs. Micca PB42X - Specs - Sound Quality - Usage - The R1280T loses to the Micca PB42X due to lacking crossovers, small components that filter the frequencies of the sound in order for lower frequencies to be sent to the woofer and the higher ones sent to the tweeter, which improves the sound of speakers.

Comparison vs. Logitech Z625 - Price - Sound Frequency - The Logitech Z625 wins against the R1280T due to the subwoofer included in the former, which improves sound quality. The Z625 also has a better frequency response range, and while it is $50 more expensive it is worth the upgrade especially for movie audio.

Comparison vs. R1280DB - Bass - Treble - Highs - Tweeter - Price - Build - Frequency Response - Connectivity - Remote - Performance - Features - Compatibility - Side Panel - Design - Dimensions - Inputs - Accessories - Specifications - Controls - Mid-Bass - Volume - Packaging - The R1280T and R1280DB have mostly the same base design, build and appearance, whether it’s the grilles, the side panels, the panel buttons, or the rear layout. They also come with mostly the same accessories with a few key differences owing to the R1280DB’s extended connectivity options. The two do have a number of differences in terms of functionality, connectivity, inclusions, and sound quality. Both have decent, adjustable bass and treble, but the R1280T has better highs and frequency response. Both are sold at a reasonable price, and have passive and active speakers. The R1280DB’s highs are non-fatiguing at high volume, allowing for prolonged listening. Its mid-bass is very warm and punchy though unable to hit sub-bass, while overall tone is warm and all notes are audible. Midrange is clear with audible vocals and instruments. In terms of connectivity, the R1280DB offers 2 RCA inputs, Bluetooth, Optical and Coax, while the R1280T offers only 2 RCA inputs. The R1280T’s remote contains only three buttons, while the R1280DB’s remote contains twelve. The woofer of the R1280DB is slightly larger (0.4 inches), which is enough to provide a bit deeper bass. It also has LED indicators; red for optical and coaxial, blue for Bluetooth, and green for line 1 and line 2.

Reputation - Popularity - Edifier is known as one of the best brands when it comes to speakers that produce decent sound at an affordable price, though they are not as popular as brands like Klipsch, Bowers & Wilkins, Pioneer, and others. They specialize in manufacturing music systems, which include speakers and headphones, and their products are widely used for home entertainment.
