The DF64 is an excellent grinder with some minor caveats: its design is somewhat underwhelming and it needs a few mods for improving its performance, but with its 64mm flat burrs, a stepless grind adjustment, and its low retention, this grinder is an appealing choice for those looking for an affordable single dosing coffee grinder. It is suitable for espresso and filter coffee, favoring the former a little more than the latter, and it is widely available in the market too.

Overview - Grind Quality - The DF64 Coffee Grinder is believed to deliver great ground coffee at espresso and filter settings, and at its price point, there are no other grinders that can outperform it when it comes to single dose flat-burred grinding, with the range and motor power that it contains. This grinder has a solid foundation and allows choice when it comes to workflow and burst perspective, and for those who wish to get creative, the grinder performs well above its price point. The DF64 appeared at the beginning of 2021 and became one of the most widely-known grinders on the market at present as it filled a niche trend of single-dosing, multi-purpose grinders.

Overview - Popularity - It’s an unusual grinder made by a virtually unknown Chinese company, which came at the right place at the right time. It’s a perfect storm of several coffee forum trends packed into one, affordable package. The new grinder is (most often) called DF64 and it is produced in China by a hitherto unknown company known as FL Coffee. It has already been sold under a range of different names in various parts of the world: Probarista G-IOTA in Belgium, Turin 64SD ELR in the US , The Solo in England, DF64 on Amazon. Confusingly, the Turin DF64 grinder is sold under several different names, depending on the distributor and country it is purchased in.

Build Quality - The DF64 is well built, with most parts being made from metal. It weighs 15 lbs and measures 10” by 5.2” by 12”. The compact footprint means it can easily slip into a spare space on the kitchen bench. It has a fully metal build that comes in a bunch of different colors.

Build - Weight - Material - The DF64 has a surprising heft at 15 pounds. It's heavy, it feels premium and even the motor sounds good too. The Turin DF64 is mostly made of metal, thus the weight.

Burrs - The DF64, as the name indicates, uses 64 millimeter flat burrs, which makes it relatively easy to purchase new burrs when wanting to explore other options than the stock burrs. Grinders with burrs this size are not typically found at this price point. The burr size means that enthusiasts can switch the burrs out for better quality ones, which is the route most choose.

Design - Portafilter - The design of the Turin DF64 is simple and minimalist; it has a simple design that is functional but a bit rough around the edges. When comparing it to the Niche Zero, it lacks finesse. Like the Niche and the Eureka Oro, the DF64 has a sloping shape to reduce retention. It has a tubular body, with a slight forward lean popular in this grinder. With no fancy computers or touch screens, things that do go wrong are easy to repair.

Dosing Cup - The DF64 includes a little plastic dosing cup, which for some is preferable to grinding directly into a portafilter, but others don't like the plastic.

Durability - The grinder feels extremely sturdy. While the durability of the DF64 is largely untested, so far, it seems to have been well received with few reports of issues. At this point, it’s tough to gauge durability as the DF64 has only been on the market for a short time. Additionally, because a largely unknown Chinese company manufactures it, there are no other products from the brand to use as a guideline.

Bellows - The DF64’s bellows feel a little hacky, like they weren’t designed to clear the grounds chamber adequately. As a result they don’t feel particularly premium and are messy.

Burrs - The DF64 includes a good set of flat burrs from Italmill. There is a plate that sits on threading, which is outside of the burr chamber. The top burr sits against three springs that hold it against that top plate. When screwed in and out, this is pressed closer, allowing more to come further away from the bottom rotating burr. The shape of the burrs is the big difference between the Niche Zero and the DF64. The Niche Zero uses a conical burr set, as opposed to the flat burrs in the DF64. Changing and cleaning the burrs is simple and easy. The DF64 has a unimodal style burr.

Grind Adjustment Ring - The grind adjustment ring on the top of the grinder is easy to navigate. There are 90 marked grind settings, but it is a stepless adjustment system so one can precisely dial in grind size. Because of this, the grinder has potentially infinite precision when it comes to dialing in the perfect brew.

Ease of Use - The DF64 is straightforward to use; simply weigh the desired dose and grind. This ease of use is one of the grinder’s selling points, along with a portafilter holding fork. The fork means one can grind directly into the portafilter, which is not present with the Niche Zero.

Performance - Retention - With the bellows, the DF64 is a relatively low retention grinder, which is one of its big selling points. If one does not use the bellows there will be some retention, but not much. Overall, it performs better than most other grinders in this area. Flat burrs typically retain more grounds than conical, but the bellows design of the DF64 alleviates this problem.

Comparison vs. Niche Zero - The DF64 is considered to be the very strongest competitor to the Niche. The Niche is a little bit more expensive at about 500 pounds, and they are a little bit more supply constrained. The DF64 is cheaper and is a flat burr grinder, as opposed to a conical burr grinder with the Niche. Given the upgradable nature of the DF64, there is a ton more discussion about modifications, shortcomings, etc. A lot of the Niche posts are excited people pre-ordering or receiving their grinders. All conicals and flats are different as well so it's not as simple as flats Vs conicals. Both grinders taste good. The Niche has only some minor and fixable flaws. Choosing between the DF64 and the Niche comes down to 2 main decisions: “flat burrs or conical burrs?” “How important is workflow?” “Is preference towards easy to use or modding?” The biggest Niche killer is that it's only available every 2 months and will sell out in minutes, like an apple iphone. It is ready to use out of the box without hassle but one can't tinker with it much. The DF64is quirky, needs a lot of fondling to get the gist of its handling, but has potential to tweak certain points. The DF64 makes good coffee but some corners cut in the design/UX. Not a huge loss experience wise, good price to performance, and better availability - seems like a really good option for a lot of people. The DF64 is mass-manufactured in China. Grind quality is great on the DF64, the price is great, but the user experience is inferior to that of the Niche. The DF64 is a great alternative to the Niche, and probably easier to obtain, besides aesthetics and some usability - which are both down to personal preference. The DF64's dosing cups has "ears" that slide into the portafilter fork. If buying an aftermarket dosing cup it would need to fit the pf fork.

Comparison vs. Pricier Grinder - If using just as a filter coffee grinder, the comparison point wouldn't really be the Niche, it would be the Wilfa Uniform or the Fellow Ode, which are both a little cheaper than the DF64. It does perform better as a filter-only grinder and that's with stock burrs or with SSP burrs.

Price - Value - Prices vary depending on location. In the UK, it's about 400+ pounds. It has been seen on sale for about 400 euros, and for five to 600 US dollars. Even though most people wouldn’t consider this cheap for a coffee grinder, it’s an attractive price for a well-built flat burr espresso grinder.

Value for Money - There simply is no other grinder in this price range that can compete with the premium grind quality offered by the DF64. Value for money is where the DF64 shines. It probably does not match the Niche Zero or Eureka Mignon in terms of quality. Still, it is also notably less expensive than those options — depending to some extent on where in the world it’s ordered from. If wanting a high-end coffee grinder that can grind consistently for an espresso or a pour-over, the DF64 is one of the least expensive options other than a hand coffee grinder.

Complaints - Plastic - The portafilter forks aren’t the strongest, and it is not recommended leaving the portafilter on them unsupervised. Likewise, the dosing cup looks and feels a bit cheap, but this can easily be remedied by investing in a stainless steel one.

Downsides - Static Cling - The distance between the spout and the dosing cup is long enough that microscopic fines can escape. This is annoying when brewing lighter roasts for filter and using the bellows, resulting in a mess. RDT is advised.

Drawback - Messy - One downside of the DF64 is the mess, especially when grinding lighter roasts. The combination of static and an overly large gap between the dosing cup and the grinder’s spout inevitably leads to a spray of fine grounds over the countertop and grinder.

Issue - Alignment - Some people have been lucky with great alignment from the factory, while others have had to work more for it. Using an erasable marker seems to be the most widespread method, when checking whether the burrs are parallel.

Issue - Burrs - In practice, most users find that the stock burr set is excellent for espresso but less reliable at coarser grind sizes. For this reason, a common choice is to upgrade to SSP burrs.

Issue - Chaff - A user tweaked a few small things that have (mostly) eliminated the chaff issue, but these tweaks don’t address the unpolished workflow.

Issue - Circuit Board - Power Button - Suddenly, the power-button couldn’t turn off the grinder anymore. The circuit board ended up needing a replacement as a result. Apparently, a few of the first units coming out of the factory have had this issue.

Issue - Dosing Cup - Portafilter - Forks - There are some good designs for grind indicators but it's up to consumers to put one on. Some opted to use the included dosing cup with the grinder not just because it’s the preferred workflow but also because the forks did a very poor job of holding a heavy portafilter in place.

Issue - Dosing Cup - The dosing cup has an issue in that it's not particularly well set up. When one presses the bellows, quite a good bit of coffee comes out. And that coffee is held behind a silicon declumping screen.

Issue - Grinding Performance - There was an issue with actual grinding performance of the DF64. There were a surprising amount of fines in the grounds which upon investigation, what was initially thought to be caused by misaligned or poor quality burrs was in fact a problem with the silicone clump crusher being far too stiff, effectively creating a complete seal. Cutting the fins to make them less obtrusive to the grind fixed the issue and improved the quality of the grinds.

Issue - Popcorning - The difference between this grinder and other single dosers is that one is not going to be able to pour beans in with the burrs already spinning. The DF64 has a lot of popcorning which necessitates the use of a permanent cap over the bellows’ opening. The other issue the DF64 struggles with is popcorning. This is when the last few beans in the bellow bounce around and struggle to go down, leading to a reduction in grind consistency.

Issue - Regrinding - The DF64, like most espresso grinders, has a declumping screen installed in the chute to break up clumps and reduce static. However, this screen also hinders the flow of coffee down the chute, resulting in some of the coffee being reground and producing fines.
