Overview - The Sette 270 grinds 16gms of coffee in just about 8 seconds with almost no residue left in the shoot to go stale. It takes oily beans with no problem and won't back up like the others. It's heavier than it looks, but the "7" design looks elegant, and it is not as big as imagined. The Sette 270 excels in grind consistency and adjustability. It's the cheapest grinder that can do espresso quality grind. Though the quality of the build is questionable it is still considered good for its price point, even more so with its performance thanks to low retention, good extractions, a new grind drive mechanism, and a convertible system for grinding for both drip or espresso.
Overview - Purpose - The Sette 270 is a decent grinder for espresso, but home espresso is finicky and can be as much as a hobby as it is a nice way to make some coffee at home. One advantage of expensive grinders is that they also can excel at drip (depending on which burr set is installed). With the Sette, one is basically stuck with espresso.
Recommendation - For espresso, the 270w or 270Wi is recommended, due to those having more grind settings to dial in. They also have an Acaia scale built in and are highly accurate, though they suffer from having a rather noticeable noise level and when dosing directly into the portafilter, they unevenly funnel in, making a distribution tool or dosing into a secondary container a necessity. With the Sette 270, there shouldn’t be a need for a new one but people will want one soon enough. As with most things it depends on the intended usage. If one is looking for a single dose espresso grinder and Niche is outside the budget, then Sette 270 is probably the best option.

Burrs - The Sette 270 is a versatile burr grinder. It has two burrs that are placed over each other, with the top one being motorized and the lower one static. The conic shaped burrs container makes sure that all the coffee grounds will go through both burrs and in the bin or portafilter below, which makes cleaning easier and avoids mixing old coffee to new ones.
Design - The Sette has been available for several years, yet its appearance not only looks contemporary but it still seems more modern than some newer models. It will look great with any high-end espresso machine.
Design - Hopper - A 10 oz hopper sits on top of the Sette 270. Meanwhile, on the front is a panel for using the grinder and timer settings. The display is backlit, and although it’s not as visually appealing as those on more modern coffee grinders, it is easy to use and practical.

Shape - The grinder is vaguely 7-shaped, from which comes the name (“Sette” means seven in Italian). The Sette’s “7” shape means that the grounds can fall straight from the burrs to the portafilter or grounds bin, which prevents retention.
Weight & Capacity - The Sette 270 model is very similar to its bigger brother, the Sette 270Wi. It is a 3.2 kg grinder and has the capacity to hold up to 300-400g of coffee beans.

Timed Preset - To save a preset all one needs to do is hold the preset button down until the screen blinks. There are three time presets, and there is also a way to adjust the grind time, as well as an on-demand feature where if one held down the play button for a few seconds it will start to grind and actually count up itself.

Coarse Grind - By altering the macro setting between 25 and 30, the Sette can produce coarser grinds for French press or drip coffee. However, the calibration of the S1 burr (which the Sette 270 has) ensures a fine grind, so it isn’t great at the coarser grinds.

Grinding - The Sette is the best grinder for espresso, as it comes with two stainless steel shims to increase its fine grinding range. After adding one shim, the Sette functions great as an espresso grinder and could still make a good V60. Depending on the density of the coffee, different roasts need separate adjustments.
Grind Adjustment - Grind adjustment is easy as there are clear marks on the macro and micro dials making it easy to replicate and swap from fine espresso to coarse without detecting a difference in extraction.

Grind Consistency - The vertically placed conical burrs allow very precise grinding. French Press and Pour Over fans won’t find the Sette 270 satisfactory. The grind consistency at these levels of coarseness isn’t the same as at finer settings. In terms of grind consistency the Sette 270 is impressive.
Grind Control - The grinder offers far more control, meaning the grind size can be tweaked much more for a perfect espresso.

Grind Size - This is not the recommended grinder for brewing mostly pour overs coarse grounds. It is remarkably consistent at the finest setting with only two tenths of a gram variation over the five grindings. It rounds slightly faster in the middle than at the coarse setting.
Grind Speed - The Baratza Sette 270 is a very fast burr grinder, specifically on the order of 3.5g to 5.5g of ground coffee per second, which puts it above the vast majority of espresso grinders on the market. Grind speed however is fast: up to and even over seven grams per second at coarser settings.
Loudness - Drawbacks - A drawback of this incredible speed is the loudness: the Sette 270 is very, very loud due to the extreme speed at which it operates.
Demri - Little Coffee Place
Noise - The sound is steady but not too annoying, and the grinder is fast. It is a bit louder than previous grinders.
Performance - Brews - It’s ok for espresso, but for everything else, not so much. The Sette 270’s range is a little weird: 9 to 10 worked well, grinding for about 8.2 to 8.7 depending on what was in the grinder. This often yielded 21g, though sometimes it would need to grind for a split second longer.
Performance - Environment - The experience is going to vary based on beans, espresso machine, environment, and individual grinder variance, but in one user’s experience it has run as coarse as 8b and as fine as 6e. Another user usually tapped the portafilter on the counter a few times to level out the volcano shape. Another user remarked that the grind quality, consistency and retention are great for a grinder at $300 US.
Retention - The grinder sits at around 6b to 5ef, single dose run for 8 sec to get it all (18g).

Comparison vs. Sette 230 - The Sette 270 appears almost identical to the Sette 30. However, there is a big difference: the Sette 30 has 30 macro grind settings, while the Sette 270 has the same number while also having a stepless micro-adjustment ring underneath, which overs an additional nice micro settings.

Benefits & Flaws - It performs really well but the build quality looked really questionable. The plastic used to make it didn't look sturdy. It looked like a cheap low density plastic that could wear out quite quickly.

Issue - Burrs - The conical burr design is intriguing and game-changing. In a standard grinder, the outer burr stays still while the inner burr turns. However, the opposite is true of the Baratza Sette.
Issue - Grinder - Brewing - One user does mostly manual brewing using chemex, so this seems to be the "wrong" grinder for them.

Issue - Performance - The machine is not as capable as Baratza claims. Their recommendations page says that this unit is capable of doing everything from pour over to espresso, which one user has stated to be wrong. Another user says they’re getting 5-6 grams trying two different beans in a 2 second grind.
Issue - Polarity - From time to time the grinder polarity reverses, and one has to dial it back in.

Issue - Speed - The grinder produces a fine coffee shower in a huge sphere around it. A user complained of spending more time cleaning the grounds than making coffee. The grinder was supposed to save a step and speed up routine but it has not.

Issue - Static - A user states that one has to look for non magnetic beans, which are pricier but well worth it. The grinder has apparently had issues of static which is caused by the friction of the beams rubbing up against each other in the grinding process. Some grinders lend themselves to this more than others.
